Looks like they have announced them the wrong way round.
La Rosiere is number 10 rather than number 1.
David@traxvax has more work to do.

It is also well-connected with another resort just over the border in Italy - La Thuile -which means skiers can take advantage of an 11-kilometre run, crossing the border on the way. |
It is the dullest run in the whole of Espace San Bernado IMHO

Looks like Bansko is pushing hard to be the new Val d'Isere at no8.
Beats Zermatt, Vail and Les Deux Alpes none of which make the top 10

laundryman,
I think this year it is the travel industries What have we got to much accommodation in that we need to shift list. With the possible exception of Whistler that is put in to make the list a little more respectable.

Good nice to see that the season is in "full swing", even in Termas de Chillan where I'd guess its unlikely to be snowing until June/July next year (just after La Ros has had its final 12m dump to tide it over for the summer season )

That has to be the weirdest list ever. Gives you a good idea which resorts chucked a bit of co-op marketing budget the way of the independent tour operators.

So:
Whistler
Val d'Isere
Saas Fee
Kranjska Gora
Courmayeur
St Anton
Termas de Chillan
Beaver Creek
Bansko
La Rosiere
... are the top 10 of world skiing ?
Methinks there's a tad of pisstaking going on here somewhere

I guess it depends on the criteria used to rate the resorts, if you know those you can rig any of these lists to give your resort a higher rating than it might otherwise obtain

brian, actually what's going on is this... AITO is by definition made up of small tour operators. Mostly they each specialise in particular parts of the world... one I know only does Canada, another only does the Balkans, another obviously specialises in South America! They have a committee made up of the owner/operators of these companies so they each have a vested interest in making sure their pet resort (and probably one that they have persuaded to give them that co-op marketing budget) is well represented on the list. I have no idea how they conduct the vote but they end up with the proverbial dromedary. Luckily I don't believe that anyone takes a lot of notice.

I wouldn't mind if they title the list as "the top 10 most profitable skiing resorts for the operators". As for real skiing anybody putting Courmayeur as the 4th position or the best Italy can offer need his/her head examined.

You know it makes sense.

Lets look on the positive side. if this keeps people of the places we want to go, who cares?
The real thing going on here - I suspect - is an organisation generating plausible straplines for its members ads.
Bansko - on of the 10 top resorts in the world say Experts in promoting their own business

Yeah, but what about 5th? A bit more respectable?
Rather irrelevantly to this conversation, Google will be skiing in Courmayeur in January.

I,d certainly recommend these two although I think Chillan is not on the average skiers radar .

fatbob, if you weren't such a complete know it all you'd perhaps be aware that La Rosiere holds the record for the maximum snowfall in France, that information came from the Tourist office but you'd probably think they're lying. BTW, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO LA ROSIERE OR ANY OTHER SKI RESORT?

Herman Tryer, that's an interesting opinion. Is the snowfall record a 13 foot dump by any chance? If so, are you Jef Wickes?

Yes, Courmayeur struck me as a strange choice. I like the place, great food, but it's not the greatest (or even the 4th or 10th greatest) resort in the world by a long way.

Herman Tryer, who 'really' gives a poop about ultimate snow depth as the measure of a resort , that sort of pimping is nothing better than stuffing a sock down yer pants . . . and just as laughable.
La Ros is a nice resort with both pluses and minuses EVERYBODY knows this, this horse is dead, it's late, it's passed over, eaten its last oat, the only reason you can flog it is because it's been nailed it to the stable door . . . get over it, get a life and change yer sock its starting to smell as bad as the horse.
