The Cathedral ski area in Argentina has suffered a chairlift accident, poor maintenance is being blamed. Something to think of for those jetting off for some real summer skiing. From the graphic it looks as if the chairlift grip slipped or failed. This could also be caused by greasing the cable as happened at the 1999 Pic de Bure accident in France (Google translation posted below)

Pánico!
Accident in the hill Bariloche Cathedral
There were 18 wounded ones; some jumped from six meters BARILOCHE SAN CARLOS. - The ski and the diversion in the snow that covers the summit with the hill Cathedral left their place yesterday to the shouts of aid, scenes of panic, skiers which they were thrown from six meters of stop, the cinematographic sirens of the ambulances and rescues with ropes and harnesses, soon of the shock between six aerosillas with csapacidad to transport four people each one. As a result of the accident, 18 skiers underwent wounds of different consideration. Seven of them had to be derived with fractures to different welfare centers.
This put the magnifying glass of the rionegrino government on the contract by 20 years signed with the concessionaire of elevation means. By means of an official notice, the provincial governor, Miguel Saiz (UCR), informed that they "en case that is verified that the accident happened by lack of maintenance, would evaluate the rescission of contrato". According to police sources and witnesses of the fact informed to the NATION, the accident happened minutes after the 11, when the two jaws of aerosillas (whose capacity reaches to transport four passengers each one), slid downwards and hit against other four near the summit of the hill Cathedral, to 2000 meters of height. Two weeks ago it had happened a similar fact when two Canadian tourists underwent contusions and, indignant, denounced the fact before the Secretariat of provincial Tourism, where a summary began, whose conclusions, until yesterday, they were not known.

great tranlsation!
Scary stuff though, I've always wondered how easy it would be to jump and reduce the chance of injury if you got stuck on a chair lift, but the damn thing coming off the cable is a different matter entirely!
What is the consensus on getting stuck on a chair lift? Monkey crawl to the nearest pilon? Jump with boots on or off? (Or stay put and allow bottom lip to wobble?)

As a youngster I got stuck on a chairlift when the power failed, they had to wind us backwards by hand, took about 90mins followed by a longish but fairly flat walk in ski boots
