Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Who's in Morzine / Les Gets / Avoriaz for the season?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Mrs PhillipStanton and I are out from 11th December until after Easter doing our BASI 3s with BASS in Morzine and I thought it would be useful to find out who's around for the season.

I thought it might be nice to arrange either a social ski or beer sometime close to the ski test weekend and before things get busy for Christmas. I'm open to suggestions on this...

Myself (Vicky) and my husband (Adam) live in Morzine year round. I did my 3 with BASS last year! I presume you are on the Trainee Instructor on the 18th Dec? We have some people staying in the chalet on that course.

Where are you staying? We live in Morzine near the centre.

You can see more about us on www.snowandtrek.co.uk

Hi snowandtrek.

Good to hear you did your BASI 3 Very Happy Did you enjoy it?

BASS are offering a "Fasttrack" course this year - a cross between Formula 3 and the Gap course - which starts on 9 January. It's more structured than the Formula 3, but less structured than the Gap course - full time for the first couple of weeks; part time; full time shadowing; part time and then full time again. If that makes any sense.

We've got an apartment at Pied de la Plagne - on the Thonon road, just out past the bakery - which we've had a couple of years.

Hi Phillip,

Well, you won't be the oldest here that's for sure. I'm not much into the BASI sort of stuff but have been doing seasons in Morzine, on and off, for a while now so would be happy to do some free skiing with you, when you are not shadowing that is. wink

cheers

Thanks zzz. Fortunately we've "only" got two weeks of shadowing and that's the UK half term weeks - so I'm guessing that I won't be missing out on much anyway.

Always happy to be shown around by someone who knows the area - it's a big area and there's loads we don't know very well yet.

PhillipStanton, I'm a mere part timer but we can certainly endeavour to see you round then - I only need to sort out overnight accom as I can't believe driving home will be an option! The test's the 16 and 17th isn't it? I need to check with the Mrs but the Friday might seem like a plan. Bouda Bar open?

snowandtrek, that's very kind and we will take you up on it if we need to but I was rather thinking of a chum's spare room! My whole plan is of course predicated on all the DIY being done and dusted in CHX. Actually. I've just realised that I've made a commitment to be in Cham that Friday so count me out I'm afraid... ;-(

David Murdoch - alas the Friday night was bad for us anyway - we have my parents visiting and they'll not take to the experience (they are going home on 16th (Dec) Wink ).

snowandtrek - the Avoriaz webcam is now showing things looking very "thin" at resort level. Expected, but still Sad

Have finally got around to looking at your web site - the accommodation looks very nice. It'll explain why (I've realised) I kept seeing you minibus in the builder's merchants over the summer!

Hello Fat-Russ. Excellent.

Maybe you should set up a little cafe inside Voiron. My bet is that most of the people in there would welcome a nice drink on their second or third visit of the day!

Afternoon PhillStanton,
What a nice rainy day in blighty.
Cafe in Voiron now there is an idea, although i suspect that not a lot of DIY and Refurb will be getting done due to the number of visits and stops in the cafe, not to mention the amount of toilet breaks after consuming all that liquid.

Good afternoon to you Fat-Russ. It must be said that London is growing increasingly unattractive as the start of the season grows near - just 15 sleeps to go...

Actually, I think the "winning" business idea for Morzine would have to be a proper fish and chips shop. I reckon half the self-caterers would go for it one night a week - and a goodly proportion of people leaving the pub...

(Les Gets, of course, being too upmarket for a fish and chips shop!)

I was actually thinking that myself only a few hours ago. Love to see the maire pass that one.
As for Les Gets, If it was on the same lines as Rick Steins chippy in Padstow then it may be ok.

Fat-Russ, Les Gets might to too posh for fish and chips but I still bet the Brits (who seem to own half of the town) would still go. We will be there again this year on 25th Feb. Word of warning - my mad three year old is following in her older sister's foot steps (or should I say snow plough turns) this year.

got a skiing mate going to Mozine 20th Jan - 27th Jan with a group and he fancies learning how to board, any recommendations or schools at Mozine, what is the resort like for learning, it seems a bit low so does that mean lots of chair lifts for messing up? any info would be appreciated

cheers

Hi rayscoops - I'm not sure how low altitude of resort equates to more chair lifts? Anyway, he'll be pleased to know that the main Pleney lift up from town to the teaching slopes is a bubble lift - so one less thing to worry about Wink

All the main schools do boarding lessons - BASS (www.britishskischool.com); E2SA (http://www.morzineski.fr/en/bienvenue.html) and ESF (http://www.esf-morzine.com/). There are more specialist schools and you could try contacting The Park, which is a good snowboard shop, http://www.theparksnowandskate.com/ (not the best of sites!).

Hope that helps.

PhillipStanton, thanks for that, very helpfull.

I have recently learned to board my self and doing the basics on a little bank of snow at resort level was useful; I noticed the resort is a bit green at the moment on the Morzine webcam hence my worry about having to jump on a chait lift to get to snow before learning the basics. As you say the bubble takes you up to the nursery slopes so not a problem.

As I am on the web at the moment, any recommendations for restaurants, apres ski etc.

cheers

rayscoops - the ski / board schools all meet at the top of the Pleney for adult lessons anyway.

There are no shortage of good places for food and beer in Morzine. If there's one "must do" for a bar it has to be the Buddha Bar in the centre of town - which absolutely anyone will be able to point you at. The place above the Buddha Bar is also good - although I've forgotten its name at the moment. The Dixie Bar, Bar Robertson and Jolly Good Bar (known locally by its old name - the Sherpa) are also "classic" apres venues.

I must admit that I've not yet eaten anywhere in town that's done a bad job of food - although l'Etoile (just up the slight hill from the Buddha Bar towards the main Pleney lift) has become a favourite - the ribs are particularly recommended. The Combe Zore also does something for everyone (and is a bit cheaper) - the pizzas and steaks there are particularly good - but stay away from the wine and stick to beer in there as the wine is over-priced / under-qualitied. Places in town can get busy and, whilst that week is a quieter one, booking is advisable - it's possible to turn up at an empty restaurant only to be told that there's no room. Ten minutes later it'll be packed.

Food on the hill is a bit more hit and miss. The Vaffeur, at the top of the Belevedere chair lift, does good food (salads are particularly good) and excellent mulled wine towards the end of the day.

Other on hill recommendations are on this thread on Les Gets.

rayscoops, ignore the greenness of the webcams. As mentioned elsewhere, Morzine and LesGets seem to insist on village level cams for publicity rather than decent top of lift webcams. Although that does seem to be changing with the new Les Gets panorama cams... just a shame they are not on any external sites!

Regarding lessons, I learned with Tim Scott. I think the URL might be www.skischool.co.uk but it looks different to what I remember.

For food, I just avoid the lunchtime rush. Usually get there half hour before the rabble arrives, or have late coffee break, ski on empty pistes, and then late lunch.
I tend to stick to the Les Gets side, but might do a bit more of the Morzine/Nyon/Chamoissiere side this time (as well as the PdS loop).

only 54 sleeps to go...

I'll concur with Vaffeur, but if you want another on the hill venue then try the Nyon, refurbed and good grub you must book.

Tim Scott is still going strong and can be found in Les Gets, i would also recommend 360 although French they all speak better English than i do.
