I'm about to rent a car for a New Year trip to Switzerland. Most of the companies are quoting me "plus 8CHF" for snow chains. In the darkest corners of my brain I thought I recalled that all rental cars in Switzerland HAD to be equipped with chains during the winter months. Does this mean they would be included anyway ?

I've never booked (or paid) for winter equipment when renting at (the Swiss side of) Geneva airport, but have always had chains and winter tyres.

You could buy some for that. Though they'd cost more in excess baggage to bring back. But at least you'd have your own chains which then wouldn't fit anything other than the hire car. And it would only take an extra couple of hours to find the right ones...

I've reserved a car through Holidayautos at Geneva airport (Swiss side) and there is a local charge payable for the snowchains I think 8CHF sounds about right. I just took this to be an additional local charge, even though chains are required during Winter and the car will come with them.

I've noticed that on a couple of quotes from GVA recently. Chains or winter tyres on as a separate (but compulsory) charge. Keeps the headline figure down a bit I s'pose ....

brian, I would say it's that. Chains are not compulsory in Switzerland - that's France. Occasionally certain roads will become snow-bound and the radio will tell you you can only get up there with chains, but that's purely pragmatic - not a legal thing. Winter tyres aren't a legal requirement either - however if you have an accident in the winter and don't have winter tyres on you will be deemed at fault by the ins. co.

halfhand, we have never been charged the local charge though. Perhaps just lucky. PM
Frosty, PM Spyderjon, and ask him who he booked with from Geneva, they had a 9 seater Vito for the PSB.

eng_ch, not so sure about hire cars always coming with chains in France. I've hired cars dozens of times in Nice to go skiing in Isola and Auron and they have never come equipped with chains. I've had to use them a total of 2 times out of about 20-odd trips and bought them en-route both times (regular price about eur35, but hiked up to eur55 when everyone wants them!). Could be partly a result of hire car companies in Nice and the Cote d'Azur not normally equipping their cars with chains for obvious reasons!

enaikay78, they don't. However, if the police in France say you're not allowed up the road without chains then they are compulsory.
eng_ch, may be urban myth but I thought there was a law that said the car hire firms had to supply chains in Switzerland between December and April ?

enaikay78, sorry I wasn't clear - it's France where it's a legal requirement to carry chains in the mountains in winter. I wouldn't know about care hire.
brian, again I don't actually know about car hire - but it's not a legal requirement to carry chains in CH so I'm not surprised that teh care hire cos- would charge for sth their cars are not obliged to carry by law
