Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Treat your own knees?

I came across a book on Amazon, which sounds very helpful. Treat Your Own Knees: Simple Exercises to Build Strength, Flexibility, Responsiveness and Endurance (Paperback)
by Jim Johnson.
The blurb seemed sensible. I ordered a copy but, unfortunately, delivery times are long (seems to come from the US) and delivery promised only by December 29th. Not much time to put the advice into practice before the ski season (though I am familiar with quite a bit of knee strengthening stuff, having long had problems). Anybody come across this? Or thinks it's rubbish and wants to sell a copy right away?

I think that there is a lot that can be done through exercise to help with the old knee's, but I'm not sure that I'd choose a book over a visit to a physio that I trust. It's just finding one !

I've been doing leg presses , curls, extensions on each leg plus Bosu jumps, lunges and stretches & my knee was fine for a couple of days skiing at PSB.

david@mediacopy, true. It also varies from one person to another, so I would tend to avoid people who come out with blanket statements of "this works" or "this doesn't work".

The only problem that I have with self help physiotherapy books is that it is hard to know if you're doing the exercises correctly, and if you do them incorrectly they can exacerbate the problem.

Kramer, yes, I agree. I've had quite a few physios giving me advice over the years, and gym inductions etc, and am reasonably used to coping with my knees. If anyone tells me to do deep knee bends or lunges over the front foot etc, I ignore them. I also try to alternate tough knee days with easier ones, when I ski, because my knees do become swollen if given too much punishment. I get through quite a bit of ibuprofen gel! The blurb for that book sounded as though it brought together a lot of sensible advice and would be a good reference. I'll post a review when I get it.

pam w,

I often do similar stuff.... I may attend classes when I am in a suitable location... but often (like now) I'm not... the books/DVD's are a good way to give myself a program when i cannot go to classes etc... and from years of doing the exercises I have some idea of my range of motion etc and which ones cause me havoc...

yes, I do, and I think it has helped - but who knows, really? Because I ski most of the season now I don't go at it quite so hard, and I think that has helped. The days of 6 days solid, dawn till dusk, were a bit much. I don't look for ways to make my knees young again, just to keep them going for another 20 years at least.

glucosamine - take with food - some GIT irritant effect
- care with diabetes can affect glucose control

I've evangelised to a few snowHeads about glucosomine and zipvit, particularly the runners amongst us.
Touch wood, knees have been ok, but my mate noticed marked improvement of a long term dodgy knee after a couple of months.

little tiger Why is 'take with food' important ? I've wondered about this.

Jerry,

glucosamine has been shown to have a reasonable incidence of gastrointestinal irritation as a side effect.... ie it can "upset" your stomach just as the non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen(nurofen) can...

david@mediacopy, Jerry, I had glucosamine recommended by a consultant Knee surgeon two years ago and after about three months i had a huge improvement in flexibility and markedly reduced swelling. I used to eat Ibuprofen every day just to function but now only have to take it occasionaly. I have heard mixed reports from others about continued effectiveness but i figure like vitamins cant hurt to keep taking. One mans opinion though...

little tiger, Thanks. Another quick Q then, if it's not upsetting my stomach (ie. it's not bothering me) does that mean it's ok, or are we saying it may be 'upsetting' my stomach with my knowledge and may cause problems later ?

Jerry,

yes it could be chewing nice little holes in stomach without your knowledge - hence you have it with food to lessen the impact...
