Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Buying new boots! HELP

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi

I've been on 3 ski hols so consider myself an intermediate (ish) skier. I have decided to buy some boots / skis / poles but have no idea what will be best for me.

Don't want to spend a fortune (have budget of about £200 boots, £250 skis) - any recommendations...??

I have been to a shop and was fitted for the Salomon Proforma 8 boots and Head C 220 skis - but thought i'd check with you guys first. Puzzled

(p.s. I'm a 6ft 3 fella and about 14-15stone if that helps!!)

search google for ski bilek
You'll be surprised at the prices of the skis:)
Figure out whether you want to specialise in park skiing or piste skiing or all mountain skiing and then look at the skis available in those areas:)
From recollection the c220 is primarily an intermediate piste ski which sounds dead on for you:) Im new to this whole buying skis game myself, i recently bought a pair of ex rental Rossignol b2 all mountain skis and bindings from www.edge2edge.co.uk for £210 so you can pick up great skis at bargain prices that way:)
I think everyone will say to go and get your boots properly fitted, the make and model that fit best are the best:)

drfc8, welcome to snowHeads!

OK, my first bit of advice is forget the budget for your skis, and concentrate on getting properly fitted boots. Then, if you have money left, consider skis.

Where abouts are you located?

I absolutely agree with Wear The Fox Hat. (how unusual wink.
Well-fitting boots make much more difference to your skiing experience (pain, ability to really use your skis properly) and may well cost more than £200 but less than your total budget of £450.

You can get very good hire skis and the skis you require will be changing fairly rapidly because your technique is still developing.
Also it is probably not economic to buy skis until you are skiing at the very least 2 weeks per year.

Having said that, I have just bought my first pair of skis (from ski bilek on an e-bay auction) after 21 years and at least 15 weeks of skiing. All the posters on this site who have used ski bilek have been very impressed as far as I know. My skis cost £253 inc. delivery. The cheapest I have found them in the UK is £599.

If you have spent time looking on this forum, there are several bootfitters who come well-recommended. Whereabouts do you live (approximately)?

Ta V much!! I have been having a good look around the site - it's full of useful info!

I live in Daventry - about 20 mins away from Lockwoods in leamington that everyone on the site keeps suggesting as a good place to go for boot fitting.

I'm off to post a question about skiing in Serbia (I'm there for New Year)

Thanks again! Very Happy

drfc8, do look at ski bilek's e-bay auctions. I got my skis at considerably under their "buy it now" price.

You're in luck!! Lockwoods are excellent. Go along there, explain everything and you'll come away with the ideal boots for your needs. If you're on a tight budget, forget the skis this year. Boots are far more important. Pay whatever it takes to get them right, but it shouldn't be much above your boot budget anyway. Personally, I'd sort the boots out at Lockwoods and then demo some skis on your next holiday, with a view to buying some for the following year. You'll find some amazing end of season deals then too.

It is only a good deal if the boots fit.
I looked into a similar deal last year, but the boots didn't fit, so I spent £250 on just a pair of Nordica boots instead. Picked up some skis - Salomon Scrambler 8 - end of season for £240 incl bindings.

drfc8, as rob@rar pointed out it was Snow and Rock. I can't see the deal on the web site, (it might be work blocking the pop ups thing) but it is definitely in their latest catalogue. I can let you have page number and more details tonight if you are interested.

It's page 217 of the S&R catalogue, which can be picked up at any S&R store.
