Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski bags

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'd be interested in recommendations for ski bags. I have a non-padded Ellis Brigham bag that is way too long for my skis (they are 147's - don't laugh, that's the right length for me as I'm short!). I would like to get a good quality padded bag that isn't way to long so I don't have to fold the end over too much. I don't really want the bag to scream to potential thieves "Hey, there are some really good skis in here!", so would prefer one without a brand name, but if this is the best, then I'd still get it.

It doesn't have to take anything other than skis and poles - I have a boot bag and suitcase for the other stuff.

Cheers

kermit, the sportube looks very good. Is it actually adjustable in length? I don't really want my 147's rattling around in a case designed for 200's!

richmond, the carrier we are going with (I think it is BMI Baby or just possibly flyBE) insist that the only thing they will allow in ski bags are skis and poles. Nothing else. I s'pose I could put in bubble wrap to fill the gap.

docsquid, ...might be worth a PM RachelQ. (although she is currently on duty at the PSB!)One of the junior Q's won a really great padded skibag at the EoSB and it was then surplus to requirements. I know it was a great bag because I won one too...! They were a bit short which was the problem.....but plenty long enough for your blades...ooops skis......! Toofy Grin Toofy Grin Toofy Grin I think they were branded Ellis Brigham, though not 100%. Mine's in France otherwise you would be welcome to that.

Yes very adjustable, and the padlock locks it at the required/set length.

kermit, seconded. The Sportube is great, and doesn't flop about when half-filled girlie 147s!

docsquid, its minimum length is 130cm, so your extra-long downhillers should be fine. I doubt your skies would rattle about, though, as it can be quite a snug fit.

Thank you folks. I am absolutely convinced that the Sportube is the thing to buy. Definitely more secure than my tatty little EB plain canvas ski bag! It is cheapest from Beans online shop, so that's where I've ordered it from.

What a great bunch of people you are!

It would certainly provide padding when I topple over Wink

docsquid, .... good choice! I didn't think of it when you mentioned you were looking for a padded bag. I have had one for a few years and they really are great.

...a few do's & don'ts which you may care to peruse.....

Don't carry it on your shoulder at, or outside major airports - you are liable to be shot immediately, as it looks like a Surface-to-air missile launcher.... Toofy Grin

Don't leave your skis in the tube when you return from skiing - a lot of condensation can build up inside and rust the edges. (I speak from experience...! )

Do leave one of the padlock keys at home, plus take one with you! or better still, get a decent combination padlock. (Again I speak from a place of wisedom....it's not that easy to bust open a padlock in a ski resort... Embarassed )

Do book on a degree course on how to insert skis & poles into the tube....! (Initially it is a bit tricky to get the hang of.)

I have found it easier to pack, by putting poles inside the surgically removed leg of old jeans and securing them with two velcro bands. (A shirt sleeve may do if your poles are very short... Toofy Grin ) Wear gloves, or use a thick cloth to push the strapped skis into tube, if your ski edges are SHARP Twisted Evil You have been warned!

Tubes are great for painting funnies, etc. on them, or sticking 'Go-Faster' stripes on........

I shouldn't laugh but I never thought of that and just pictured myself & the other half at Heathrow with our Ski tube/rocket launchers. One on each shoulder. (Arnie!!)

Last time I used a ski box (gave it away to another snowHead when my skis became to wide/tall for it), I didn't use the lock, but put a screw lock carabiner on it.

My Sportube has duly arrived from Beans, and it looks brilliant. I'm shortly planning a session trying to put my skis and poles inside. It comes with a sort of huge safety pin to keep the lid on, because airlines don't let you lock your luggage now. BernardC, I don't think I can carry it on my shoulder - I'm too short, it reaches the ground!

erm, I think he was suggesting balancing it, with the middle of the tube on your shoulder, hence the missile launcher comments!

Or rather, suggesting not to, unless you want to get shot.

Has it been proven that underwear, clean or soiled, won't have a detrimental effect on skis?

When flying into the USA, use a TSA (google for it) approved padlock or strap, or they'll just break whatever lock you have on your luggage.

No pictures, but I've now packed my skis in the Sportube for the flight on Saturday morning Smile Smile

It is very easy to use, they supply a rubber band thingy to secure the brakes, and I'm quite confident it will protect my skis. I've wrapped the bindings in bubble wrap to prevent them getting scratched. Might wrap the poles up a bit as well, but essentially it was a very easy process.

I haven't put in any underwear yet, but was told by BA that they will only allow skis and poles in a ski bag, nothing else. The underwear will just have to go in my boots instead.

You can get away with it tho'

On th other hand, don't pack sunglasses (or other breakable stuff) in your boots. Or if you do, remove before filling your boot with a foot Blush

I have both a skitube thingy and a small snowboard bag (I have little ski's rolling eyes )
I travelled with BA for the PSB and had both Jacket and Sallopettes in with my ski's and nobody bothered.
