Bit of help please.
Got a little trip (14 blokes) going for a long weekend at the end of Jan. We're flying to Salzburg and were hoping to go to Saalbach but we've been having trouble getting accomodation. We have one offer but it's 1 or 2km out of town towards Hinterglemm ... at the bottom of run 34a if that means anything to you.
Although quite good for skiing back to we are not really intending to ski back to the hotel but rather a lively apres bar. (Quite a few have never been to Austria before and this is quite a BIG part of the attraction) .. then back to the hotel for dinner/showers and most of us will be back out again I'd imagine.
Obviously being a bit out of town is not ideally suited to this type of behaviour so we started looking at other resorts and have been looking at Mayrhofen. We've got an offer for a b&B in the centre of town there 5 minutes from the lifts.
Any thoughts on the relative pros and cons, both skiing and apres, of the 2 resorts would be much appreciated to help us make up our minds.

I was in Saalbach last season and we stayed a bit out of the centre, it's not too much of a problem as there are loads of ski taxis, we just went for apres ski and then piled in the taxis for about 2 euros each. oh and the apres ski in Sallbach is awesome!
I've been to Mayrhofen in the summer and it's pretty stretched out

I agree with 5Stitches. I was one of a group of 25 guys staying @ Hotel Sonne (which did do a long weekend booking for us) @ 2 km out of Saalbach village. Had no trouble getting (cheap) taxis into and out of Saalbach in the evening. In any case, the walk was only @ 20 mins.
It was possible to ski back to the hotel; alternatively we skied into the centre of Saalbach - had a few drinks and then hopped into a taxi back to the hotel (there was always a large number of waiting taxis).
We were initially apprehensive @ distance from town but it simply wasn`t an issue.
The hotel was great. The rooms were comfortable, the food good and the fitness facilities (pool, sauna, steam room, plunge pool etc) were excellent.
Don`t know Mayrhofen but Saalbach was a brilliant place to ski and to party.

RichA, I skiied run 34a when they closed the lifts early due to bad weather. I ended up walking back into Saalbach in my ski boots rather than wait ages for the buses as they were packed. I actually managed it pretty well in about 20 mins as it was flat and paved all the way, so you could easily walk it in normal shoes in about 10 mins.
So, you could either ski run 34a back, change your shoes and walk into Saalbach for the apres, or ski back into Saalbach, get drunk and waddle back in your ski boots, or preferably get a taxi!
As for Mayrhofen, the apres ski is just as good as Saalbach except you can't ski back into the town itself other than from the Ahorn. You get the Penken lift down and then make your way to the apres ski bars. We usually went back to the hotel first and dropped off our gear and then hit the bars.
So, I suppose there isn't much difference between the two places based on where your hotel is in Saalbach. You can walk to and from the lift in Mayrhofen. You may need to rely on taxis more in Saalbach but you can ski back to the hotel.
