could anyone advise me on footbedds please? i think i may need them as my ankle and arches tend to roll inwards when skiing - i notice it particualrly when on drag lifts and my skiis are parallel. i wondered if there was a procedure for this, best makes etc. and do they go inside or outside of the boot liner?

Hi lynned, the best bet is to get yourself down to a good bootfitters who will custom fit your footbed. I don't know of any in Scotland but I'm sure they have been mentioned before - any Scottish snowHeads help? Alternatively do a search - drop down menu in user facilities at the base of the mountain (top left of page). Footbeds go inside the boot liner, ie right next to your foot. I hope you get them sorted.

Every skier needs a well-fitted footbed. Even tiny weak points will be magnified greatly over a full say's skiing. As for particular brands, it's the same as for boot brands - your feet will decide.
I have no idea who in Scotland has a good reputation for fitting, but as someone who has been in pain in that past but now has the benefit of well-fitted boots, I can say it's well worth the effort wherever you have to go.

thanks for the advice all - i got my boots in greaves sports - they sell off the shelf foot beds are they ok?

It depends on your feet.
You need a good bootfitter. CEM (who is fully qualified foot expert), above recomended some good places.

lynned, I'm no expert  but no they're not. You should really get footbeds custom moulded to your feet. CEM's advice above would be good to follow with invaluable contact names. Can you get to any of those shops he's mentioned?

lynned, I started off with Supafeet (the green ones) on top of my existing footbed, this was ok for a few weeks but the pain returned until I bought new ones. I finally bought custom beds last season frankly the difference was amazing, I suffer from the same problem that you have. All I will say is its worth whatever it costs to get it sorted out. For me it was like a new (better) sport previously unkown (tear's in eyes).....

If you think that you may be in any way abnormal, be careful about who you trust with footbed fitting. I had some done at snow and rock a few years ago and was never really happy with them. Went to Lockwoods to get them redone and the fitter refused to do it, saying that I needed to see a podiatrist. He was right and the podiatrist fitted insoles are brilliant. But how many fitters will just take the money ?

pendodave, None that are any good. Although some fitters maybe able to deal with the problem better than others. So i guess we'll never know, as you didn't see another fitter, you saw someone who decided to refer you on.

Would you care to elaborate on this? I have been to snowlines 3 times and recieved terrible service twice. The guy seems to know what he is talking about but if you go on a busy day or get the wrong person they just try to sell you any old boot. I ended up buying my boots off ebay  I know that won't be a popular statement but I don't see any point in paying over the odds for crap or non existent service. I went to Snowlines quite prepared to spend money on getting comfy boots but just got any boot chucked at me and no advice on what would suit me best. My boots now seem to fit me quite well but I would still like footbeds, I think I'll be more inclined to see a podiatrist than go back to Snowlines for this

lynseyf, See the Name' Footworks at Snowlines', our shop is called Footworks and has been established for around 18 years. A couple of my industry buddies know the guys there, 'Snowlines' that is and know us very well. Three years ago they came up withe the name 'Footworks at Snowlines'. What does that suggest to you, they deny ever knowing of Footworks, if so why 'Footworks AT Snowlines'?
I hate this story and would quite happily agree that they are utter SHITE!

I think they do offer good advice and service ......If you go on the right day or catch them in the right mood. I have a friend who got footbeds made here and they have made the world of difference to his boots, unfortunately that wasn't my experience

Anyone used FREEZE just up the road from Snowlines for boots. What are their fitters like? I'm after new boots and went in last week and they just tried to sell me a top of the line race boot - as that's all they had in my size - even though i'm now an intermediate at best after being out of the sport for a while! Got a whole different vibe from Freeze when i popped in and would be keen to give them my money, but i've yet to try on any boots there.

shoogly, personally from your description, I'd say they were trying to sell you what they had, rather than a boot that was suitable for you. I'd stay clear of a place that tries to sell you a particular boot just because that's the only one in your size. I presume that was 'size' as in length of foot, not taking into account width or volume? However, I know nothing about this shop and they may be excellent for all I know!

Sorry, just realised my post souds quite confusing. It was snowlines who tried to get me to take the race boot, not Freeze. I quite liked Freeze.

As an update to this thread I went up to Cairngorm Mountain Sports today and got footbeds made by Fergus. I ended up getting 2 pairs, one for my ski boots and one for my everyday shoes. I had been planning on seeing a local podiatrist to get some footbeds for my everyday shoes but felt that I was as well getting them today, my boyfriend also got a pair of footbeds for his ski boots.
Just really wanted to say that I would thoroughly recommend Fergus to anyone, I was very impressed with the service I got and dredged up every problem I had ever had with my feet, well worth the 2 1/2 hour drive from Edinburgh.
He asked why we had decided to drive up to Aviemore to get footbeds fitted and we told him he was recommended on here so hello if your reading this and thanks again

I think Footbeds for sure, with what you are describing I'd go for Sidas heat mouldable rather than Supafeet and have DD blocks under the footbeds to stop them rolling inwards. Do your boots have any sort of canting facility on them? if they do do you use it? The skis not running flat on their bases when the skis are hip width apart is more to do with the alignment in the lower leg, either knock kneed or bow legged. Canting of either the upper cuff of the boot or wedges under the bindings should fix your problem.

well i cannot speak highly enough of SIDAS in Grenoble for making footbeds....
You can ring and make an appointment with the podologue at sidas and have a podiatrist who specialising in skiing make you a footbed...
this is a brilliant solution for problem feet....
