Poster: A snowHead
|
I kindly lent my Thule to a "friend" who's wife managed to drive into a low car park barrier and remove it from the top of their jeep in one fell swoop
I'd like to replace it with the biggest possible, I have a Galaxy so there's plenty of room on top.
Has anyone done any research into the biggest box you can buy and also any recommendations of where to buy would be appreciated.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I bought one from them in the summer. Ordered on day - arrived the next.
We have two boxes - which gives us the option of using 1 if we have less to carry.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

bladeskier, I've used www.roofbox.co.uk for a few things, including a roof box, and found them very efficient and helpful. They identify the biggest box as the Thule Atlantis 900 (presumably 900 litres).

One word of caution (well more than one really), Thule give recommended maximum weights for mounting on a car roof (around 75Kg I think). We have a box that is full length but about half the width (of our Grand Voyager) and I reckon i've had it pretty close to the weight limit once or twice. A bigger box would make it more likely to overload, which might have unfortunate consequences for box, rails, roof, or vehicle (and passengers ).

Cars also have maximum roof loading. No idea whether a full roof box would come close; it would depend on what it was filled with, I suppose. Helium would be fine (but might make the steering a bit light), but osmium might be dodgy.

According to this site The max roof load for a Galaxy is also 75Kg, I'd agree with richmond, and avoid the osmium.

I have had excellent service from roofbox more than once. Because our Fiat Multipla is too high to get into our covered parking with a box on top we bought new Thule bars and the top of the range sliding ski/snowboard rack (which slides out from the top, so you don't have to climb up to get the stuff onto the rack). It worked exceptionally well. Straightforward to use (easier than the boxes, which were not always easy to lock). On a big car, provided garage height was not a limitation, you could probably use a box plus the ski rack, which would be a good combo.
