Poster: A snowHead

I'm going to be on Oz for 3 weeks next summer, should I pack my ski togs and go to Thredbo for a couple of days? Or am I better sticking to the coast and the Red Centre?

Martin,
there is no snow in Australia in the summer. All the resorts are already closed as this was a
particularly bad year, but even in a good year there is nothing white except the breaking waves on the beaches, which are beautiful almost every where.

I suspect he (Martin) meant our summer, which is their winter!

Martin Nicholas, there's lots of things that are unique to Australia, or better there than anywhere else, and skiing isn't one of them on either count. If you're only going for three weeks (for part of which you'll be jet-lagged) and will not be a regular visitor, then, unless you're utterly obsessive about skiing, I wouldn't bother.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

While I've not been to Thredbo, I have been to Oz several times, and know plenty of auzzie skiers (family, friends & clients). They all ski in NZ or europe, which should tell you something. As others have pointed out, there are so many things to see & do out there, you won't get bored in 3 weeks:- the surf and the sunshine are considerably more reliable than the snow, even in their winter.

Martin Nicholas, I too lived in sydney for a year or so a while back. Thredbo is a fun weekend when the snow is ok, but if you are only in Oz for 3ww, do something else. Go up to the daintree rain forest, the Blue mountains or something like that. Northern territory is fun, but a long long way. Have fun...

Thanks guys,
I get the message. Done Daintree and FNQ in a 4wd camper, Cooktown was a great place for a couple of days. I will give the skiing a miss and do Brisbane and the red centre

I made the trip to Thredbo from Sydney and was quite impressed with the skiing. There are some pretty worthwhile runs and pitches. You get to see Australia's capital city, Canberra, on the way. It's also possible to ski Perisher Blue Cow locally.
If the snow's good, go have a look.

get yourself over to WA....
the southwest is totally stunning, the northwest is one of my favourite areas(well excepting Broome which some stupid fool went and "discovered" and built a silly resort on the middle of the beach where the surfers used to camp - THAT is an eyesore!).... if you have not been to the centre then the gorges there are fascinating as are the olgas...
the great ocean road is a must do drive.... otway ranges have some great walking... alpine national park has great back country skiing if you don't mind the earn your turns style(good guides available in Jindabyne for example)

Martin Nicholas, We are going to be in Melbourne for a couple of weeks next summer and will almost certainly (snow permitting) head to the slopes for at least a day. We are then carrying on to New Zeland where we intend to do exactly the same thing! It is winter over there afterall so seems rude not to...
