Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

France > Chatel > Chalets?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi all, just trying to organise a week away with the missus in late January and wondering if you've got any suggestions or recommendations for chalets in the area. Never "properly" booked a chalet before, so any hints, tips etc will be greatly appreciated.

Preferably want somewhere that does catering (but MUST be good food!), etc, and where we don't have to hire a car or anything like that.

Looking to spend a wee bit under £500 for each of us...(hopefully!)

Cheers cheers,

YF

I can't help you with Chatel but, as a general rule, to ensure you get decent food go with an owner run chalet (hopefully they'll have learned how to cook if they've been doing it a while!) or one that's obviously a cut above the average (for which, obviously, you'll pay more). If you go to a tour operator standard chalet it's more of a lottery - you might be lucky and get a decent chef who's decided to be a ski bum for a season or you might end up with a gap year kid who's a very average cook.

Late January's pretty low season so you might be able to get a late deal with one of the upmarket chalets but you'd probably be lucky if it was in Chatel.

http://212.56.95.203/chalet/properties/properties.htm contact Stuart. I know it says chalet construction but he runs what sounds a nice chalet just outside of chatel that he built himself

YerFere, don't forget there are legendary overnight dumps in this magical little place (13 feet in one night was once reported by the infamous Jef Wickes!).

a few places to try around the ported de soleil. I haven't used them but I think I got all the names from here so they come with a partial recommendation.

Thanks all for your quick responses and warm welcomes!

ben wright, thanks for the general tips, and we are now definitely looking at owner run chalets.

Masque, brian, dan100, ashton parker, thanks for all your recommendations, I've thrown them in the mixer. Currently looks like a toss up between Chalet Bouqetins (http://www.alpineactivechatel.com), Chalet Praline (http://www.gourmet-chalet.com) and Chalet Rustique (http://www.alpine-connection.com).

The last seems to be edging it - their chef sounds like he's proper trained (Michelin star quality sort of) which appeals greatly. And I know that quality food helps make a holiday (for me anyway Very Happy).

Still open to all suggestions though, not booking for a week or so (damn these awkard pay-days!),

Blitzen, 13 feet in one night!!!?!!!!

Yep, Jef swears it's true (Jef Wickes, bit of a legend himself in another place that we can't mention here).

Hi YerFere

We stayed with Gary and Kari at http://www.alpineretreat-chatel.co.uk/ this year in February. Nice chalet, great food and they really couldn't be more helpful. Took you by minibus each morning to wherever you wanted to ski eg Superchatel or Lingue etc saving you the horrid walk with skis. We even managed to ski back to the chalet on the last 3 evenings from Superchatel after negotiating the gardens at the back of the chalet.

Gary was really keen to ski with guests. We only managed one day with him as he hurt his knee so couldn't manage another day after this. He also boards. This was great as we could find the best runs and also the best food stops too.

The chalet is convenient for the village for trips to the shop or bars.

There is a great photo on our daughter in action in their photo album. Very reasonably priced too with free pick ups from Geneva if you arrive within certain times.
