45 Ski resorts in 14 US states are buying green power to offset their electrical energy consumption. As part of the industry’s Keep Winter Cool program to combat global warming, the National Ski Areas Association is encouraging its members to buy green power. ...Green power is generated from renewable and nonpolluting energy sources such as solar power, wind power, geothermal power and small scale hydro-power.

Those wind turbines will look very nice next to the super-heated outdoor pools and hot tubs

It's a start, now let's see a few other resorts doing it too...

I agree. It's a start. Interesting to speculate on what is 'the end'.
Some scientists predict that it is nigh. Others believe that mankind will need to take massive actions.
Bode Swiller, what's your contribution to the 'hot air' issue?

lampbus, and don't forget the eco-friendly monster V8 trucks everywhere.
Wear The Fox Hat, Sadly, as is often the case with American PR, they are making a meal out of a tiny contribution hoping that we'll all somehow believe that they are doing their bit... still enjoy going there though!
David Goldsmith, Strap one of those turbine things to your chest and I reckon you'd become be carbon neutral, and even put power back into the grid.

Bode Swiller, the thing is, they ARE doing their bit. Yes it is PR, but it is also a bit of action, rather than passively sitting back criticising (which anyone can do)

Yes, there's a lot of emphasis on this in the ski business now. And a lot of focus on resorts: a lot of focus on the mountain environment to counter glacial recession, upward-creeping snowlines, shorter winters etc. etc.
There is also concern about what's known as 'greenwash' - initiatives which may not add up to much but keep a clean image for specific enterprises. There is very little focus on key pollution sources: industrial, transport, aviation.
The big picture is one of continuing and deepening global crisis. That's for the politicians to deal with, based on what they think the public and scientific imperative appears to be.

Wear The Fox Hat, I'm not critical of their actions in installing wind turbines. I am cynical about the way they over play the PR. In Europe, most resorts are just busy quietly getting on with it.
Bearing in mind the generally lower temperatures in N America, it must take colossal power to keep outdoor pools (most often hardly used) and hot tubs going strong. Heated sidewalks! Who needs them? Stand back from a North American resort at night and you can literally see the wasted energy escaping upwards in plumes of steam... you just don't see that in Europe. Wind turbines, great. But there are easier targets to attack first.
Being hydro is no excuse either as it just means power has to be produced by other means elsewhere in the grid.

Bode Swiller, how are Euro resorts busy quietly getting on with it?

Wear The Fox Hat, I think there's a 'green resort' certification scheme in France (Europe-wide?) which I'll try and find details of. One of the Trois Vallees resorts was recently awarded that status (Les Menuires?). My electric bill at Les Arcs specifies how the power is generated: IIRC it's 84% renewable, low emission.
