Well it's nearly June and it's snowing down to 1100m in the Alps ( and even lower possibly, I just don't know) .... No need for the Global Warming/ Doom Merchants to quantify / justify as it looks like there just may be hope for alpine skiing in the years to come

Does this all mean the winter season is getting later? Will half term holiday ski ing mean May instead of Feb?

Listen to the Farmers, they had it right last year & many years before.
Snow this time of year is not unusual at all.

Well I spent the last two days in a marina in the Isle of Wight in a tiny boat with a freezing cold Force 7 winds and torrential rain. And a good book, luckily. We sailed home in a forecast window today, beautiful wind, changed direction just when we wanted it to, perfect. But not warm. I had four layers on, despite sailing down a very moderate wind, and was just about OK. Checked email on return to find snow forecast email for Notre Dame de Bellecombe, 20cms. But as someone said above, it's not unusual. It's just that those tropical temperatures in April made everybody think summer had come. That was when the weather was wrong, not now.

pam w, Be thankful ! You would have had force 10+ down here yesterday , Today you might just need 'power' ....

Agenterre, it might have been more than a 7, actually, but I always hesitate to exaggerate! Force 7 is quite a lot in a 19' boat though. Even when it is tied up and especially when it leaks..... it's so unusual to have 24 hours of such very heavy rain. I must find out how much rain fell in that period, it felt like the heavens were opening.

OK, just looked it up, 50mm on the 27th. Not bad for the soft South.

And that was the record daily rainfall for the Isle of Wight. 50.8mm, to be exact.

Boris, it was undoubtedly the wrong kind of rain, especially when it was falling through the headlining onto my sleeping bag. When it falls so fast I think it runs off too quickly to do a lot of good, depending on the hydrology of the area concerned.

I've never really understood this Ok I accept that the rain needs to soak into the ground and if it falls to fast/much it doesn't, but surely it runs into rivers which can then be used to top up resovoirs etc?
