Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

No but seriously, if anyone out there could translate the average Austrian mountain restaurant menu for me, that would be fantastic. wink I'm used to skiing in France so no trouble there but distant memories of skiing in Austria in my school days bring back images of 'frites' etc etc etc day after day. What's the food like on the Austrian slopes and is it good value? Cheers guys

My sister and her friend used animal noises to order a ham sandwich & a chicken sandwich rolling eyes That method doesn't work well for vegetarians though.

Tiroler Gröstl = This is basically a traditional dish made from leftovers (e.g. meat/sauage, potatoes, onions, dumplings & pasta) all cooked up together in a pan with a fried egg on top.

Note: it probably won't actually be leftovers, but that's why the dish originated from.

Hats off to DB for effort. To answer your other questions, Austrian food on the mountain (and in the town) seems to be pretty good value and good quality. It helps if you like pig, though, and dumplings - and, let's be honest, who doesn't?

I've skied in France, Austria and Switzerland and the mountain food is definitely the best / most reasonably priced in Austria.

Tiroler Grostl is definitely good, Kasspatzle is a novel eating experience - basically stodgy pasta/dumpling in a pungent cheese sauce, possibly topped with crispy fried onions. Somedays I like it, and some days I don't - feel like lying down for the afternoon to digest...

What's with the raisins and Austria, they seem to get randomly chucked in??? I'm not a big fan of them and if the menu said the dish included them I wouldn't order it but when you order a nice apple dish and it comes with them it's a bit annoying.

If you are looking for something light, soups with bread (suppe mit Brot) are a good idea.

As possibly their most famous pastry/desert, (in a country famous for cakes and pastries) and widely eaten in England and most other places, couldn't they assume people know what Apfelstrudel is?

??? it was me translating and stating the obvious. Sometimes people will make desserts for those of us who are too picky to eat rasins.

I was just stating the obvious as sometimes something with the same name isn't the same (e.g. bacon/speck) and a sausage isn't just a sausage it's a whole new food group over here.
