Poster: A snowHead

Just out of curiousity, how long might one expect on average to get out of a pair of skis?
Im thinking of buying a pair that have had 4 weeks on snow. They look fine but do the materials soften or weaken drastically with use?
I know I ask lots of stupid questions but I'll only ask them once:)
cheers

Four weeks use should be fine unless they have been completely abused. The bases of the skis should be free of any major damage (eg no holes where you can see through the base material to the ski's core) and the edges should be not have any major dinks or kinks in them. It would be a bonus if the skis have been serviced (holes & deep scratches in the bases filled and waxed, edges sharpened) a few times during those four weeks of use. I've bought a few pairs of secondhand skis over the years and have been happy with all of them, although each pair were carefully inspected prior to purchase.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

4 weeks is nothing especially if they are wood core. I'd guess most seasonnaires/ski pros expect to get at least 100-150 days use before even thinking about moving to the rock ski pile.

I usually buy second hand ski's and have not had any problems. I work on the basis that the previous owners are unlikely to have abused them as much as I will.
The real problem is that they are always "so last year" !

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Just one word of warning, check the thickness of the base - you can get a good idea by looking at the depth of the edge.
I have seen skis in the past that are not very old but have been serviced at a poor shop and they have basically ground the majority of the base away. So in this respect the age of the ski isn't everything.

My first ski instructor told me he always bought/obtained one pair of fairly cheap skis for teaching, and would use them virtually every day all season. (He would save his "nice" skis for off-piste etc.) Then at the end of the season he would chuck them. Therefore skis should last a full season (20 weeks?) no matter how cheap..... in theory!

I expect my skis to last 2-3 seasons. That is 60 - 90 weeks! However, I am quite light on my skis, don't get them serviced as often as I should, and avoid rocks like the plague. Most of my male colleagues will go through a pair every year - 20 -30 weeks.

Charlotte, you must indeed be twinkletoes!
My skis last about 180 skiing days, and my boots are dead in about the same number of days.

veeeight, But how do you define "last"... Until there's no edge left? I would guess at 120 days before I'm looking for a new best pair. Boots last longer although liners only last me 80-100 days (and then the smell becomes too much for others to bear...)
element, but as you see Ryan, 4 weeks is not much used. Are they skis you like though? At least, are they "modern"? Bargain skis often turn out to be not such a bargain...

David Murdoch, When they are "dead" in terms of camber, rebound and energy, when they will no longer tolerate any more stonegrinds for fear of grinding through to the core, or like you say, no edges left to file!!

I have been told that most scratches and marks are repairable. It's the edges that could prove difficult to mend. So check the bases for 'deep' cuts near the edges; and the bindings for loose bits (as they are usually bashed about quite a lot) and if they seem ok then go for it.
I would suggest you go get them fully serviced before you ski them. A nice bit of wax will make them feel like new
