Poster: A snowHead
|
I already've posted this message in another topic which I think was not the proper one. That's why I copy-paste it here in a new topic.
We're a family group of 8 adults and 5 kids. We already have the flight tickets to Zurich airport and have decided to try St. Anton first week of December (between 2nd until 9th). My question is on regards of the "sure-snow", what this resort could offer us within that season period? Do you know what we could find there? Any other suggestion in the Zurich radius of 3 hours for the transfer?
Many thanks in advance.

I'd go along with the other advice you're bound to get and that is, if you don't need to decide on a resort straight away, wait until a couple of weeks or so before and go wherever has the best snow. Last year we skied in St Anton on 2nd Dec and although only 3 pistes were open, the conditions were not at all bad. Many resorts won't even open until nearer Christmas so your choice may be limited anyway, many open as soon as there's enough snow (rather than on a particular date) so it's impossible to predict

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

If you want a fairly open resort you need to choose one that specializes in local weekend skiers (e.g. Flumserberg) or early season (e.g. Saas Fee, Zermatt, Kaunertal, Pitztal etc.) Kaunertal is probably the closest glacier resort to Zurich. Laax and Engelberg are closer but have limited glacier skiing.
Of the local areas I would expect Flumserberg to have quite a lot open if the snow is good. Maybe Engelberg also but I've never been there before Xmas.
Non glacier tourist resorts are unlikely to have a lot of pistes open even if the snow is good owing to lack of demand.

nessy, is Flumserberg open that early? You're the F'berg expert of course Hoch-Ybrig is usually open by mid-December but earlier if the snow warrants it

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Many thanks to all you folks!
I'll take a look at Flumserberg and the other ones. In Spain we've a very long holidays (complete week 49), but we made the wrong choice flying to Zurich (we could try Geneve and Tignes), I guess.
Due to the babies age, Zermatt, is too far away from Zurich...but I must try Zermatt once in my life! (I just have skiied Cervinia..."in the middle" of THE STORM! and not enjoyed at all).
Many thanks again, once the resort will be decided...We'll have to find a ski in/ski out Chalet for so much people, and so far, it's becoming a nightmare for me, not so easy at all. Or the Chalets still are not under rental (off-season even if the resort is "fully" open? e.g. St. Anton), or sold out or not so big, or, or...I'll let you know sooner what is going on. Hopefully I wont bore you so much

You'll need to Register first of course.

eng_ch, Flumserberg is always the first local area to open. Normally in mid November with very limited terrain and maybe only artificaial snow.
floquet de neu, if you are set on booking in advance, Flumserberg is far too risky. Better to go for one of the Austrian Tyrol glaciers: Kauntertal and Pitztal are the closest to Zurich.

You've done the landlord a big favour by booking that accommodation that early. Resorts are near-empty then. In return they should give you a snow guarantee and cancellation option.
That said, best of luck!

Yeah, the landlord, who seems to be very friendly and honest, has told us to make a deposit is not necessary at all until beginning of November and then it'll be very few money 250€ (which would bring back the bigger part due to snow guarantee and cancellation option). Anyway and as we're going in group (13!) and have already the flight tickets, we'll go anyway and if there's not snow we'll do other activities (and shot myself if I wouldn't die before due to a nervous crisis)...I expect, some slopes will be ok with artificial snow, at least...or couldn't be at all?...

If there's a really serious snow shortage you may want to bail out of Lech completely and find somewhere else.
I had a bizarre experience in the early 1960s at Christmas in St Anton when there was very little snow. We left the resort and went to St Moritz in Switzerland, where there was plenty.
