Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Two of Australia's most important ski resorts - Thredbo and Perisher Blue in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales - are reporting record-breaking business, and the best conditions since 1990.

This report from the Sydney Morning Herald.

So we should get PG to send his daughter Hannou to the Antipodes on a regular basis - she seems to have attracted super conditions. The 1/2 French Ambassadress.
Great news for the Aussies.
Here's a very active discussion forum where you don't need to register to read how much they're enjoying it all.

Good conditions, but not so much powder where she is, in South Island NZ. In fact they only went to Queenstown because it was impossible to book Thredbo this start of the season, well before the snow arrived all accommodation had been taken.....

If Charlotte Swift is still about, she might like to know that Richard "Mad Dog" Evans is teaching again in Thredbo this season. Anyone know if they have broadband? Little Angel

Alan Craggs, Thanks for the news. Every year he says he's not going back.... I'll hopefully catch up with him in the autumn in the UK.

For any snowheads going ski-ing in OZ at Thredbo, I highly recommend Richard - a really great instructor with no "guru" rubbish ideas!!! Smile

They sound about as well organised as the South of England where even a flurry of flakes can paralyse the place. Wink Shame to have all that white stuff and not to be able to get up to the resorts. Is this another instance of 'global weirding' (copyright D G Orf)

May have been unfair to the Ozzie snowplough and gritter drivers. According to this article it has been quite a violent storm.

kuwait_ian, even in the SE England some of the problems were understandable. One recent (2003?) snow storm, the snow where my wife was working was so intense that the rush-hour car tracks were being covered up befrore the next car passed. In those condiations no amount of clearance preparation could work - on smaller roads, especially. Add to that the fact that the system just rotated over the one spot, a lot of snow fell.

Half of the reason for the disruption is the fact that a lot of cars (or the drivers) aren't able to cope with the conditions and you get gridlocked roads and accidents. This can make it difficult for snow ploughs and gritters to get through.

That's why some countries don't try and scrape the roads clear but insist on snow chains instead. Can you imagine the response if it was made compulsory for drivers to carrt snow chains around the SE?

That said the amount of disruption in 2004 seemed a little disprortionate - though it was very soon cleared up.

We had the bizarre sight this year of the gritter coming down he road at 0830 doing a mighty fine job of clearing the way after rush hour had died down only to be followed 15 minutes later by the roadsweeper who cleared up all the grit!!
Talk about left arm doesn't know what the right arm is doing. rolling eyes

FenlandSkier, isn't grit only effective for a short amount of time anyway? Hence the need for some pretty accurate timing in laying it down.

One month after this thread was launched, the Australian ski season is proving to be a real vintage. One resort, Mount Buller, has announced that it will run lifts until early October, which is unusual for Australia.

Here are couple of reports from ski.com.au, dated today and last Friday respectively:

Falls Creek, Victoria.

Perisher Blue, New South Wales.
