Thanks. I like to watch every flake on its way. Bit early right now though, but I'll start looking regularly by the end of November no doubt!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

skanky, thanks for those links, the Google Earth ones in particular (although the data for French weather doesn't seem to be available to load into G Earth ).
How does rainfall radar deal with snow? Is there any difference in how the radar picks up amount or location of snowfall? I spent rather too many hours last year follwing the Swiss radar to see if snow was falling, so I'm hoping that it can also tell if it's snowing!

rob@rar.org.uk, it tends to look like heavy rain, and can look like a narrower band with a heavy core (this isn't always the case and the images we see have been processed). As nearly all rain starts off as snow, some of what you see won the radar will be snow even if it falls as rain (rainfall radars are angled so the further away from the radar, the higher it's looking). All you can do to tell if precipitation is snow is to look for observations, temperature and height for the area you're looking at, really.
Sites like:
http://www.westwind.ch/
http://www.xcweather.co.uk/index.php?Loc=FR
http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/
Amongst others can be useful for local obs and temps.
Another useful resource are METARs which are airfield observations. These are what tend to get reported by the sites above, but you can do searches for them yourself (e.g. the MetO aviation site - free but requires registration) give up to date METARs for the UK, Europe etc. You will need to learn how to decode them, but it's fairly simple to learn with a guide (again freely available on the web).
Finally, there are the forum sites where you will get links, forecasts and reports. I use a couple but wouldn't want to recommend one over any others as they all seem decent enough to me.

rob@rar.org.uk, they definitely pick up rain, hail or snow. I think I read somewhere that hail can look heavier than the equivalent rain because it reflects better, not sure about snow.

brian, same thing - but it can depend on the type of snow (e.g. I think large flakes reflect better than fine grains, but my memory may not be what it used to be and I may have got that AaF).

Sage, good point. I think wunderground and one or two other US sites also carry European obs.

Sorry the link did not work as I intended, you have to click on Alpine forecast maps and then on ALL etc.

peter markham, great link, thanks. That's a prediction rather than actual radar plot I think.

Yeah, that's an experimental weather model. A good one to keep an eye on though.
