Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

SMALLZOOKEEPER, double the price. When he looks shocked, tell him the price is PER SOCK, not for a pair. Then start bartering from there.

...it's obvious you need someone good working there, say from January 2008...

Some definitions needed.

Haggling: Lizzard offers to smack Wear The Fox Hat 5 times round the head with a pair of orange boots. Wear The Fox Hat doesn't like the sound of 5 so argues it down to 3. That's haggling.

Wear The Fox Hat, I don't give a rodent's bottom! These things are important. Can I reasonably refer to my cat as a chairleg? Wander into a sweetshop looking for a Mars Bar and expect to get one when what I ask for is a hand-held thermonuclear device? No, I think not. Words are not interchangeable at random, thank you so very much.

FenlandSkier, thank you for that concise demonstration of meaning. Any reason for the boots being orange, particularly?

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Same thing today here, and every day. Jutta's doing her nut with a tiny shop full of peeps wanting discount on next year's stock! Shocked offering 50 euros for a helmet costing 103 euros (that one's 5 x a day).rolling eyes

DONT SHOOT ME FOR THOUGHTS but....

In any business, large or small there is a margin of discount and in this ever more expensive materialistic world we live in HAGGLING is pretty much becoming the norm.

Im not suggesting that a 55% discount is in any way acceptable, merely 10% is good but its one of those things I accept in my job and its the old thing - if you dont ask you dont get!

Also, the mark up on skis is ridiculous - i know how much a trade pair of K2's are! nough said

If the shop and the advice are good then I generally don't object to paying full MRSP especially if its next year's kit. Having said that it is increasingly the norm in outdoor sports to pay less except for very specialised kit, most US skiers would laugh at someone for paying full retail as even at the beginning of the season 10% discounts are common.

brian, if you are polite, that's the thing. Rude/pushy customer, and forget about it.

One thing I can say is that the mark up in skis and bindings is minimal compared to clothing.

brian, If you've just bought next year's stock, have to pay the tax, have to pay the lighting and your own time (and maybe staff), for people to constantly ask to buy your gear at less than cost price is more than exasperating - it's rude! This is what I've seen going on all the time, and I'm not there all the time!

Surely people must realise that if a helmet costs €103, and is brand new and next year's stock in summer, then the retailer is never going to sell it for €50 or anywhere near. You can't get top up from most of the manufacturers (especially skis), you can order and then see if you get the new stock when it's high season and you've sold out at a discount in summer...

OTOH Pascal at one of the Twinner shops told me this morning that yesterday he sold more than any other day this year! He does have a big and very well placed shop though. Very Happy

easiski, well obviously the €50 for the helmet is ridiculous and should be laughed out of the shop but otoh discounts at ski shops are not exactly unknown. A simple enquiry if that's the absolute best price the shop can do (which is what szk was complaining about) doesn't seem unreasonable to me. How are we the punters meant to know otherwise ?

brian, in SZK's case, it was for a pair of socks. When was the last time you haggled in M&S over the price of a pair of socks?

I must admit that I generally ask my chums to do me a price. But only at my mate's shop. Sophie gets a ridiculous deal at the shop in Champoluc that her family have used forever. They are probably also distantly related as everyone in the valley is.

I also have usually heard many shops suggest that they'll make you a price when you take out skis for a demo day.

Never had to demo socks though...not sure I'd want to!!

SZK, will you do me a deal if I buy:

1 pair Diablo 130s with foamed liners
1 pair Endorphine
1 pair of whatever the little lady wants to tour on
Footbeds for all 3 pairs
2 Pairs touring skis and bindings
a new Mammut suit
And can you order me a pair of Elan Fx Super G skis please too?

And if I send all my winter guests your way?

Wear The Fox Hat, the socks was his extreme example. I know M&S don't do sock discounts, I also know some shops will give a discount if asked on skis or boots.

He said:

"Why should i 'do' a price on anything?"

Answer: Because he wants to sell it. If another punter will buy it in the next 10 mins at the original price then a simple "yes, that's my best price" will suffice.

I guess it depends on how much your margins are and how much you want the sale. In the UK many specialized retailers will do a few % off for cash if it is a big sale (say over 100 quid). In France shops tend not to do this but will do discounts or extras for regular customers which is probably a better approach and of course there are the usual pro discounts.

At least he wanted to buy something. I was in a ski shop in Ax and a guy spent an hour asking advice about various boots etc then blatently told the shop keeper he was heading up to Andorra to buy the stuff there as it is tax free.

I must buy too much ski and cycle kit. I never ask, but am nearly always given a discount or get something "thrown in" with the deal.

Last couple of times it was a free double boot bag with my boots and a small discount, a decent scraper and a load of wax with my skis.

marc gledhill, I do the same. I've never asked for a discount but find that I'm often offered something. I think they appreciate not being asked. One of the new girls here (English, Grade 2, doesn't speak french, been here 2 winters but no inter-season or summers) was really pi**ed off that a shop we were in just gave me "a price" - "Oh", she said, "theyve never given me a discount, even when I asked" - I wonder .... It's not a shop I frequent lots, but still.

I only ask for discount on my skis because I get a 'bon moniteur' with my subscription to SIMS.

brian, Jutta gets asked 4 or 5 times a day to sell a helmet for €50 - seriously. This is new stock she's just got in, and technical stuff too. Honestly it stops being funny after a while.

I regularly get a small discount at one ski shop in Wengen, but I've never asked for one, I think it's just down to me being a regular visitor plus the fact that I'm always prepared to come back when their not so busy

JT, I am serious about wanting it...

But seriously seriously, assuming all goes to plan, S & I are going to exchange touring kit with each other for Xmas. The race kit may have to wait till I've saved some pennies and I don't really need a new ski suit - just some nice bright trousers.

However, if the SZK gives a big enough discount... wink

And yes, at the top of the priority are 3 kitchens, an exterior house paint job, remodelling the garden to include 3 parking spaces and a secret underground lair.

But S is view La Grave favourably at the moment!

Is this more a feature of the French attitude toward helmets I wonder or the relatively impoverished status of a lot of summer campers? Decathlon knock out perfectly functional helmets for well under Eu 50 so does this lead to a certain expectation by the public?

I've never thought of asking ski shops for a discount or freebie - you don't do it in other shops (other than Tottenham Court Road) so why for ski gear? That's not quite correct though - Mr C and I both bought new skis from EB a year or so ago - asked if they could do us a deal or throw in something - nope! And we must have spent about £800 with them. Mind you, we did use our SCGB discount but I only brought that out actually at the cashtill Toofy Grin

fatbob, Jutta is German and, without exception, all the peeps asking for the price are Italians! If they want cheap, yes - go to Decathalon - wonderful shop. If you want technical, go to a specialist shop (she's exclusively freeride/freestyle for sale). Depends what you want.
