Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Guide Book for Austria/Germany

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Odd question but somewhere this year I am sure I read on the forum of a recommended guide book for Germany (possibly Austria). Looking for the coming winter for a few less obvious places to ski that found in the obvious guide books. The book I had in mind may be in German language only but can't quite recall.

Thanks

micksup, dunno, but the ADAC ski atlas covers every single ski resort in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Italy. That should be about all you need. If you can speak German that is.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The specialist snowboarding guides always seem to have a lot more on German resorts than the general "ski guides" do. No idea why, but get hold of one of those.

micksup,

If you have a spare day and want a quietish ski in Austria check out Lofer - quite quaint. Although not a very large ski area but seemed to be very good for those with families.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

micksup, here's a few less well known resorts that you might like to try
Jenner ( Berchtesgaden ) : Absolutely stunning scenery, and usually only used by the locals.
Garmisch & Zugspitze: Completely empty during the week, but can get crowded at weekends.
Lofer is a good suggestion
Oberstdorf / Kleinwalsertal : Not quite so small, but for some reason almost completely ignored by Brit tour operators. Enough there to keep you busy for a week.

If you are based in Garmisch then a day trip to the Dammkar in Mittenwald is well worth it. If it has snowed recently and the Dammkar is open that is. Dammkar is a seven Km long valley which is kept as a so called freeride area, meaning it isn't pisted in any way, but is avalanche controlled. A single cable car goes up from Mittenwald to the top of the Karwendel, and then you walk about 400m through a tunnel straight through the mountain to pop out at the start of the Dammkar. If powder is your passion then it doesn't get any better than that.

micksup, Gosau (Austria) is part of a fairly large ski area too and no tour ops go there as far as I'm aware. It's about 45mins drive from Salzburg in the Dachstien West area.

micksup,

This site has most of the Austrian resorts, from big resorts like St Anton to a little hill with a single lift.
