Mike Lawrie, Just had a look at ORF via Google and page translation and there is quite a lot about flooding of the River Enns in the region of Steyr.
We could with some rain in Surrey at the moment!!

ORF is reporting it now as well. Problems mostly in lower Austria along the Danube right now.
Looks like we are just going to have to get used to this! Either no water at all, or so much that everything goes into collapse.
I am always amazed at how people deal with these situations. I was in Eschenlohe (nr. Garmisch) a couple of days ago and considering the damage that was done there last summer it's amazing to see that the village looks just like normal! They are building some kind of wall along the river ( loisach ) through the middle of the village, but other than that you wouldn't know that all the houses in the middle of town had been largely under water and had had their cellars filled with the contents of the sewage system and the contents of whatever the farmers spread on their fields!
The only thing that really gives you a clue is the price of real estate in the center of town! I don't think I could deal with something like that quite as well as these people seem to.

Mike Lawrie, I've been caught twice in floods in Stubaital, and 4 times in Aviemore. In Austria they clear it all up and argue about who's paying later. They just being in the Army (or whatever) and get it done. In Aviemore they argued first - result: nothing got done!

easiski, yup. Here they bring in the army and the fire brigade and have an organisation called Technisches Hilfswerk (Technical Help Organisation) which is intended to help in all kinds of disaster situations. The thing that gets me though is the speed with which the people have restored their houses to their original state. If you consider that you have to basically completely gut the insides of a room that has been under water, take all the plaster off the walls ( cos it's now absorbed lots of cow poo and other nasties ), wait for the walls to dry out again, and completely replaster and repaint the whole of the cellar and ground floor ( at least ) of the house, plus probably replace every single item of furniture that you didn't manage to move up to the top of the house, plus replaster and repaint the outside of the house.
Anyway I'm just glad I've been spared the experience so far

Our fire brigade would never go in for those sorts of duties, too busy messing around in washing machines...
