Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A winter begins

Barely, but I've started my 4th winter as a Patroler, 3rd in Megeve.
Yesterday was first aid retraining, we do it annually, it's a standard course for all official first responders, Fire dept, Ambulance etc.
Last years was all tailored to the olympics and nothing to do with ski partol, this year some of the stuff was relavant to us and only some from the national sylabus...Childbirth and newborn breathing dificulties, resusitation being the odd stuff.
If anyone is interested here is a link to the practical first aid recomendations we get....beware it's 752 pages of French!

There was real fresh snow, but as it was cold enough the Snowmakers were hard at it

good luck for the new season @Idris, and look forward to seeing your posts for this year.

i have enjoyed your various reports from previous seasons, and it gives us snowheads a window in to the work you and your fellow pistuers do to keep the slopes working and skiers/boarders safe

@Idris, A fascinating instruction manual @Idris, I like the idea that there is a whole section on "les accidents de désaturation (ou décompression ou accidents biophysiques)," especially for Tignes. They cover everything.

Are you examined on it?

I'm over on the Rochbrune side rather than Mont d'Arbois.

The link lift between the two areas closes before we do sweep at the end of the day so we don't get them or Folie duce lot either.

Getting the clients out the door before the piste closes, or transporting them down safely (you cant just let them ski home once the run is closed) is the bars problem not ours. The law changed on this quite a few years ago.

Sorry for being quiet on this one.
Truth be known not much different has happend this winter....so far. We are 10% up on clientel, 10% down on accidents. Both are attributed to better snow conditions.

A few small things of note.

Last monday we had 5 accidents, quite a bit for a weekday in January, but the weather was nice. 3 serious ones and 2 not serious.
I responded to the 2 non serious ones (in fact I responded to the first call that turned out to be non serious) and 10 min after I was all done, responded to the next call.
Strange thing was both my calls were for the same thing in the same place. Both older british weomen who had damaged/upset a knee, both on the same run, on psite marker apart and an hour and a half apart!
The serious ones, were a upturned dog sled, the injured had a painful back and broken ribs - helicoptered off.
A suspected cardiac coplaint on the magic carpet - off to the local medical center and what turned out to be a bruised cocix, wrapped in full body matteras and off to Sallanches

So far this winter I have done 9 rescues as the first to respond - these are the ones that count in corprate statistics. But I have been on 27 rescues/interventions etc. this season.

Thanks for the update I wonder what the majority of incidents are and the causes.

I was at a small resort on Tuesday and three casualties were all been seen to at the same time (different incidents). One of them was getting a heli ride. The previous couple of days I don’t really remember seeing any.

@Idris, I'd just like to add my appreciation for this thread. Apart from bash stuff this is the only one I have saved for notifications.
Great stuff. Informative and very well written.

I’m heading out to StG today, 24 hours later than planned and my knee is already hurting in anticipation, in the nicest possible way, I hope I don’t meet you but thanks for being there just in case I do.

@Idris, I find even the few bits you post on here fascinating, so please carry on whenever to have time.

Something I've been wondering about is whether there is any truth in the suggestion that Carre Neige is a contribution to piste patrol. I'd assumed (based on the documents) that it's an insurance policy where the premiums go to the insurer and that piste patrol then claim back costs from that insurance. However, I'm prepared to be corrected. Do you which way it works?
