We are skiing in Corvara and have been quoted €880 return trip by taxi from Venice airport. We’ve hired fairly luxury cars for less than that in the past but the hotel has a great shuttle service to and from the ski lifts so we really don’t need a car this time. It seems very expensive though. Can anyone recommend a cheaper taxi service please? The one we’ve had the quote from was recommended by the hotel.

@IainMcT, many snowHeads (myself included) have used Venice Cabs, and they provide a good service. How many are in your group, you'll see that their 2023 rates for a cab for 1-3 passengers to Corvara was €260, so €520 return.

Or Cortina Express do a bus service to Cortina with onward travel from Cortina bus station to the Alta Badia resorts including Corvara.

we used www.ldtransfer.it. 4 people and 3 ski bags and cases etc. It was €720 for that exact same journey in March this year. Good service on time, clean, nice big mini van.

Thank you Gored, as I stated in my email I did ask the hotel. They recommended the taxi quoting €880. I also stated that they offer a very good shuttle service between the hotel and the ski lifts but unless they’ve built a high speed lift to Marco Polo airport we still need a taxi. Thank you for you input though.
Thank you Alistair, Venice cabs sounds perfect. I’ll contact them.

Another recommendation for Venicecabs. Met at the airport on time and taken directly to accommodation which was not too easy to find but no trouble to our driver. Very reasonable between four of us. We don’t do car hire any more for same reason you mention. We get Cortina Express bus for return to Venice as we always have a couple of nights there. Just a lovely chill befor flight back.

We’ve booked Venice cabs for our trip in Jan. 600 euro return for 4 plus luggage and skis.

@IainMcT, why not hire a car yourself, potentially greener as you will do a 2 way journey, a resort taxi could be 2x2 journeys.

Your post said you asked the hotel to recommend a taxi. Not that you asked the hotel if they do transfers themselves
Are you able to change the airport to Innsbruck? Could get a train to Bolzano & work out the last leg from there.
It is because of the PITA to get there, that has always put me off.

Thank you Geoff, we usually do hire a car but it’s really hard work guaranteeing winter tyres. Snow chains are fine if you spend the whole time on snow but usually you’re driving in and out of snow. A four wheel drive vehicle with winter tyres costs as much as a taxi and spends all the holiday apart from the airport journeys sitting stationary. Plus I have the hassle of driving it which means on the last day skiing I have to obtain from bombardinos, vin brûlée, beer or wine all necessary to help with my 53 year old weary body.

@IainMcT, I drove to Canazei this March in a std Panda without any problems ( ie no snow on ground), chances of snow on the day are slim I guess.

We've faced a similar decision from Venice to the Sella Ronda. We've always settled on renting the smallest and cheapest available car possible, knowing that we wouldn't need it in-station. The cost has never exceeded 400 or so euros plus fuel, so about 500 total. You can make sure you have chains on the off chance that you'll need them. I love the idea of an airport shuttle, though, but I don't mind driving and if the difference is big enough always opt for driving. That said...if you are talking about the chance to relax for a total of 8-9 hours vs having to pay attention, deal with the rental counter faff...then maybe 400 euros/pounds difference is with it to splurge for a shuttle. What is that, honestly? 7% of the total holiday cost, maybe even less?

IME that's far worse than the actual driving.
I did LOT of airport transfer driving for friends and relatives, to Geneva, Chambery and Grenoble and can understand the high prices being charged. Often at antisocial times, hanging round the airport, got to be ready to deal with whatever the weather throws at you. I often felt that some, who didn't understand the full story, were not quite so pathetically grateful as they should have been!

Exactly this @luigi.
I've had a few cars from Venice and they've all been fine and great value. Never heard of the rental companies but snow tyres and chains provided. Customer service was also good as we've arrived later than the closing time before but called ahead and they stayed open. No complaints!

2 winters ago we arrived a day earlier for the BB.
Venice Cabs sent us a very clean Mercedes van with a very serious (although chatty if you make the mistake to tell him you speak Romanian) driver who works as an independent contractor.
We used him again last year, highly recommended.

We've driven from Venice to La Villa for the past two years. The car hire there has never exceeded 60 Euros (yes 60) for the week. The car was plenty big enough for 2 of us, and 3 would not have been an issue.
We drive up via Cortina and up over the pass past Cinq Torre and the Hidden Valley cable car. That'll be the tricky part if the weather is foul.

@drporat, I usually use either HolidayAutos.com or rentalcars.com. Last year was rentalcars.com, and I booked a car with Enterprise for 60Euros. They weren't even the cheapest - which I think was 48Euros. The booking included snow tyres or chains, and from memory the car actually had both. No surprise charges when we returned it. It was a Fiat summut or other.

Car hire has been spectacularly cheap at most N Italian locations in recent years, but this year not seeing the big companies discounting nearly as much

@Judwin, many thanks.
I've checked both now and Rentalcars were indeed the cheapest for my period, £271 for an Estate Fiat Tipo for 10 days through Drivalia or £378 for the same car through Italy Car Rent which apparently holds a better score.
Other online aggregators displayed prices starting with £330 for the same period

Car hire at Venice gets much cheaper as you get nearer the time. They have so many cars for the summer that as you get close they’ll typically try and rent out what’s left at giveaway prices.
Last year our one week rental for a jeep equivalent was £85 (early Feb). No extra charges at the end, even for using the snow socks they provided.
Most rentals give you free cancellation so I book something in advance for security and then replace it as the prices come down.

Yeah, that was my plan!
Last year I rebooked twice at ever-decreasing prices, ended up with a nearly new VW T-Cross for 6 days for £73 booked about 10 days before departure with Locauto through Expedia, probably had some cashback too!
This year it's only unknown firms like SurPrice, B-Rent, Italy Car Rent, Viaggiare, RentStart24 & Noleggiare offering cheaper prices. Some of them are a shuttle bus ride away and want €60 a week for chains which negates the lower prices. They have quite a few poor reviews for things such as cancelling rentals if more than one hour delay, giving out cars with less than a full tank and finding spurious damage on return. Anyone had any experience with any of these??
Never had an issue with Locauto, they are local licensees for Enterprise National Alamo, so not a fly by night. A previous year the lady at the desk gave me a Golf with winter tyres for no extra charge once she knew I was going to the mountains. But theirs and all the better known international brands prices seem a lot higher this year,

Plenty of smaller firms won't release the rented car at the airport if you won't pay their extra insurance, regardless if you are interested or not or if you already paid for it within Holiday Autos' booking, according to Trip Advisor's forums
