Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val Thorens Opening Lifts

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

I am totally aware that there was an accident on the Cime Caron gondola and I wish everyone injured a speedy recovery. Awfull news, awful for the resort and safety/investigation comes first.

However, on the car of that, they released the opening lifts for Saturday (Funitel Péclet, Funitel Grand fond, TC Moraine, TSD Cascade, TSD Lac Blanc, TSD Portette, TC Cairn, 4 magic carpets). We arrive next week and I'm just trying to work out how you get back to any of the other lifts if you ski down to the Carin Gondola? Once you ski back down the Carin piste, your only option (if Caron and Moutier are closed) is to take the Carin again gondola.... then you are stuck in a loop!?

I know the resort pretty well and I just can't work out how this would be workable... am I missing something?

Cheers

Ben

Péclet base is makeable from the run down from Cairn top station past Altapura?

I can't quite remember the bottom of the Carin run, but that is a potential solution if you can turn back up the hill a little!

@bensaunders1973, at the same bottom station as the caron gondola, is the cairn gondola that takes you near enough into the centre of town, you can either ski down directly to a couple of chairs, or there is a path on the left hand side from top of cairn, that you can get to take you to the central lifts, though you do have to take your skis off a couple of times to cross a couple of roads

Thanks, yeah, it does look like you may have to walk, which seems a bit odd. Even opening the new 2 Lacs lift would be beneficial, especially as that now links up to Grand Fond!

It's probably just there to give people access to that part of town?

You can get across from the Cairn piste to Peclet by cutting hard left by the magic carpet (or walk pole a few paces)

More shocking from a brief review of the new lift map is that 2 lacs seems to have moved and turned into a bin. Stay away from Orelle everyone - it's rubbish

2 Lacs seems wrong on the Piste map for me as I understand that it now goes higher, so you can ski to the Grand Fond lift from it, but also the green is longer. But I will look next week if they open them!

@bensaunders1973, there was always a green from the top of Moutiere to the top of Les 2 Lacs. It was a bit irritating and involved a bit of poling if you didn't get enough speed on the first bit. So basically, you now have to ski that annoying bit of green from the top of Les 2 Lacs as well (unless they've done some reprofiling, which is possible).

Apparently, the 2 Lacs lift (now a gondola) goes higher than before so the green has been re-profiled at the top. This is from their website...

Starting this winter, the 2 Lacs chairlift will be replaced by a new 10-seater gondola lift that is fast, comfortable and modern.

This device will arrive higher than the previous one, at the start of the BEE zip line, thus offering more skiing to beginners.

At the departure of the cable car, an entrance designed especially for children will make it easier for them to board.

I'm guessing they need to run Cairn to get people up from the bottom carpark.

@bensaunders1973, you either cut left below the station, cross 2 roads and get down to ski school/central lifts area.

Or, turn left where all the apartment blocks end, and take the magic carpet up to the school area.

The latter being easier, you don't need to take the skis off

If its quiet enough and you carry plenty of speed following the blue route above, you can get most of the way across to the peclet base station. Just be prepared to hit tha anchors when you enter the main piste to cut across it.

I'm not sure many will be going down past the Peclet lift as there is not really anywhere to go!

I was talking how you can get from the too of the Cairn to to Peclet without having to take the route across the 2 roads or going up the magic carpet.

I love going to rubbish off-piste terrain. Do you have any recommendations on where I should look for truly horrible off-piste terrain above Orelle?

Val Thorens Cable Car Out of Action for Whole Season

“We could repair the damaged cabins”, Monsieur Lalanne told PlanetSKI, “but we are a big resort and we can afford to plan ahead with two brand new modern cabins,”

He said the cable itself and the mechanism which powers the cable car was still operational, but that the two cabins had been badly damaged.

He said he was confident the refurbished lift would be back in operation during 2025 and in time for the 25/26 winter season.

Hope all those injured recover quickly.

That does mean that the Combe de Caron and Combe Rosael (two of my favourite 3V runs) are only accessible from the Orelle side...which means they'll be pretty quiet.
But big queues at the remaining two lifts over to Orelle at the end of the day....

I'd take that with a pinch of salt. Courchevel said the same in 2021 about the Saulire; it reopened last week.

robs12 wrote:

I doubt that. The only run into Orelle off the Cime Caron is black and usually black bumps - it's a minority choice. I suppose some people might have used the Orelle Caron to download but that's a recent thing and the queues at the Cime Caron would probably rule that out for most.

The majority of people still use the Grand Fond to access blue or red and for decades it was the only "easy" skiing option into Orelle. The opening of the blue Lory piste off the Thorens lift in 2016 relieved the pressure off the Grand Fond. Both those options are still there; adding a handful of end of day black run skiers and downloaders to those two lifts isn't going to make much difference. The Grand Fond being out of action would be far more of a disaster for Orelle than the Cime Caron will be.

A disaster, though, for off piste skiers wanting to access the big area on that side.

Why? It's all still accessible off the Orelle Caron lift. Just means the balance of power has shifted temporarily. The access used to be 100% with skiers coming from VT off the Cime Caron, then 50/50 for the last 3 seasons with the opening of Orelle Caron. Now it will be 100% with skiers coming from the Orelle side getting first dibs until the Cime Caron is fixed. I'd say that's just different, not a disaster.
