Son number one got stoped by piste security at the bottom of a VT lift today and ordered to hand over his back-pack to be searched.
He’s typical free rider with bright pink off piste skis and a massive off piste style back pack so I wondered if they were checking for peeps etc (which he always has) so asked.
No said piste security bod, is check to see if he had alcohol in it was the reply. I asked if alcohol was barred and was told yes was interdit. Across whole 3V I asked and yes was the answer, totally interdit. What about all the beer and wine in the restaurants - including Folie Douces at top of said lift - I asked and security bod a bit non-plussed but confirms again alcohol interdit across whole 3V.
I’m not sure what would have happened if he had alcohol in his bag, but removal of nearly €400 lift pass presumably possible?
Anyway made no sense at all.
Anyone experienced this?

Lost in translation I think.
You are not allowed to consume drugs or drink alcohol on the ski runs - they do regular controls during holiday times.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

IME they only check on lifts going up to the Folie Douce. Make of that what you will...

@Doccam, yes- in my experience they check at the bottom of the folie douce chair when the weather is good. My guess is that it’s to dissuade the large crowd that gathers in the snow outside FD, dancing and enjoying the entertainment for free.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

It's common around the lifts going to the Folie but I've only heard of it in VT rather than Meribel.
They're not going to do anything other than confiscate the alcohol. All other imaginary outcomes are non existent. Lift passes only get confiscated when you're using someone else's.

Not VT, but could be an issue not only with your insurance if you get it wrong. Very few countries have clear legal limits on alcohol levels for skiers, but last year, Italy introduced a legal limit of just 0.5mg per litre of blood (0.05 per cent) – in line with the Italian drink-driving limits. That limit is so low that a heavy night of après-ski could easily leave you in breach of it even as you head off the lifts the next morning. Not heard of any enforcement measures yet, but beware.

Alcohol banned across the whole of 3V
This thread wins the prize for the most sensationalist title in the history of Snowheads
Maybe that was the intention.

Had a couple of beers confiscated at the bottom of plein Sud lift last week, was going to share with friends and watch sunset, guy spoke good English but when I asked how it didnt make sense as lots of people get drunk at folie he said he couldn’t understand. Definitely a commercial rather than safety thing

I just checked the T&C of the 3V lift pass, and yes, it's there plain as day, alcohol not allowed outside of designated areas such as bars and restaurants. I don't know if it's the only place that has this rule, checked the PdS T&C and it's not mentioned there at all.

People here get (rightly) upset about crap skiers and boarders crashing into them and causing damage or injury.
40 years ago it was considered a laugh to drive home drunk. Now it’s the social equivalent of child molesting.
I wouldn’t be against penalties for alcohol or drunkenness on the slopes. As above, not easy to enforce though.

Why is this thread in Snow Reports? It’s about alcohol, not cocaine…

Which T&Cs did you check? I can see it quite clearly for passes issued by s3v / Courchevel & Mottaret (General Terms, section 7). I might have missed it, but can't immediately see an equivalent rule for passes issued by Setam (Val Thorens) - which is odd given that's where there are periodic reports of checks being made. (Haven't checked Meribel Alpina)
