Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi I am new to this forum hello!
I am taking, for the first time, my 14 year old twins skiing / snowboarding in Tignes next year
Can anyone please let me know of a good best priced ski school to take them to?
Also I was thinking for 7 day trip lesson every day for 5 of the days 3 hours?
Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions

Welcome, @ClairePotgieter. snowHead When are you going, and which part of Tignes will you be staying in? Do the boys know whether they want to ski or snowboard? Are you a skier?

Sorry for my assumption! What a pain that they want to do both..... It would really be better just to do one discipline, and take a beginners course for the whole week, but I can see the problem. On their first day or so on skis they will make encouraging progress, and probably fall very little if they pay attention. On snowboards they will fall a LOT, especially if they are brave and keen! Do they skate?

There are a lot of ski schools in Tignes (which is a very good choice for a late season holiday) and somebody here who knows the resort well will be along to advise on specifics. Generally you pay more for smaller groups.

Once you've settled on a ski school for the girls (one which meets close to where you're staying) you could enquire about some lessons for yourself.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@ClairePotgieter, I really wouldn't get them to try both skiing and snowboarding, 1 week isn't long doing both wold likely prevent them from getting off the nursery slopes.

In the early stages skiing is easier than snowboarding and typically involves less falling. Therefore, IMO, most people unless they have above average athletic ability or already do board sports will have more fun skiing.

Id think that trying both in resort would lead to making little progress at either. Group lessons wouldnt be set up for that. Do you foresee alternate days of ski/board lessons or 2 disciplines each day? Hiring skis and boards (+boots) or going back to the shop and switching each time? Just doesn't seem very practical to me.

Can you get to a UK snowdome or dryslope and try taster lessons in both there? Then make a decision on which to stick to and get more lessons in that choice between now and April? That way they'd also have a head start when you get to Tignes and you could get some refresher lessons/practice at the same time.

@ClairePotgieter, There are ski school recs on the Tignes snow reports page.
The Aparthotel Denali is very nice and is close to the snow front - about 50 m.

@ClairePotgieter, If you have access to a snow dome I would get them to try both disciplines there before you go so they can decide which they prefer. Would recommend lessons before going out to Tignes anyway as will make the trip far better for everyone.

IME. Evo 2 offers a good mixture of quality and VFM, while having maximum Class sizes and decent English speaking instructors.

Personally, I would concentrate on one discipline, which is hard enough to get your head around - needing time and practice. Trying to get a handle on both will slow progress on both.

The Snowdome advice above is excellent and should lead to a decision before the holiday.

@ClairePotgieter, Welcome Smile

I'm assuming you are staying in Tignes Le Lac? looking up your hotel seems to suggest it is.

I'd start with EVO2, I have had good experiences with them in group lessons in Tignes le Lac. I'd recommend booking a private instructor for both of them and asking is they can accommodate your needs in respect of skiing/boarding. They will be able to give you some expert guidance as to what will work.

You would want "Evolution 2 Tignes Le Lac" specifically because that is the one that is close to your hotel.

Their location is perfect for Hotel Denali which is pretty important for beginners. Their office is about 150m from the hotel and has a nice seating area with hot drinks etc. I'd expect the meet point to be the main square in front of the tourist information which is about 100m from your hotel. Being able to walk over to their office will be a help if anything needs sorting out.

Hope it works out for you Smile

 You know it makes sense.

Id also say having been through this with the kids, learn to ski first and the snowboarding is then easier to pick up as you understand about edges also when they learn snowboarding they dont actually get up the mountain for a few days but with skiing that progression can be fairly quick.

@ClairePotgieter, I forgot to add, if you do go down the route of private lessons you can request the personality of instructor that will be a good fit for your daughters i.e. you could ask for a young, cool, fun, female instructor. You might not get exactly what you are asking for but it does tend to help.

The ski school will generally be as accommodating as they can because they want you to be happy and also they don't want people to come in demanding a change in instructor halfway through the week because the kids don't get on with them.
