Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Seeking advice for anyone who has stayed in Hopfgarten. Young family with a week stay early January. Kids almost beginners. We are 5 minutes walk to Salvenbahn and near a ski bus stop too.
Current plan (wish) is to get the kids into a ski school so we can try and enjoy the runs on our own for a bit.
Any general tips/experiences going with kids?
How far ahead do we need to book a ski school?
Do we need a ski pass for the kids if the are only enrolled in the ski school?
What is best value for a ski pass?
How should we do the equipment hire?

I'd get going with the ski school booking if I were you. Not going to get cheaper (or more expensive) the later you leave it but always the risk of the most convienent one/one you prefer the look of might sell out of spaces.
While a lot of French ski schools do "6x 2.5hr lessons" in Austria many go for "3x 5hr lessons, with lunch break", with the option to either pick up/lunch with your children or have then fed/watered as part of the package. Up to you if you do the "dump and go all way" or "drop/ski/collect/lunch/drop/ski/collect" but I prefer it as you get 3 full family ski days in the second half of the week where you can all go on a bit more of an adventure around the resort that just an afternoon.
With just a 5 min walk and Salvenbahn being the only real game in town gondola wise you shouldn't need to carry kit too far, or worse have to hurd children/kit on and off buses against a deadline. It's fine on a full family day where your time's your own but not so much when you've got 10 minutes to get to ski school
Check as some skis school might include a lift pass in the price but generally they don't. If they are having proper ski lessons (as opposed to toddlers in more of a creche) they will need lift passes - and I think SkiWelt only do full domain passes. No cheaper 'local area' passes I'm afraid.
As for kit hire you can google the hire shops in town/check the discount code thread on these forums but 2 key ones to watch are:
1) How far are they from your accomodation? You don't really want to be tridging from one end of town to the other, past 18 other hire shops, carring kit to collect/drop off.
2) What time will you get there/do they close? Ideally you want to get all the kit sorted the day you arrive, rather than have yet another thing to deal with in the morning before ski school.
