Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Crikey:
“Kati Anttila, a geophysicist at the Finnish Environment Institute, said snow changes were already affecting winter sports in Finland’s south, with wide variation between winters. In Helsinki, the mean length of the snow season between 1991 and 2020 was 97 days. But in 2019, the snow season was just four days long”.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Kitzbuhel, Hinterglemm and Kaprun have been doing this for years - using environmentally-friendly hay and tarps rather than extruded polystyrene. Hinterglemm used to have F1 snowmobile racing through the streets in early December, using snow harvested from the previous winter and stacked up in the shade at the Nordbahn car park.
The writer of the article has seemingly not heard of ice houses in places other than Finland, where ice was harvested from lakes, rivers or the sea and stored for use through the rest of the year. This was common in Europe for centuries before refrigeration was made possible, but winters were colder then - the Thames used to freeze. Even the UK had ice houses - e.g. there's one at Battle Abbey near Hastings (but it's from a bit later than 1066).

Murren, Switzerland, has been open (for pro skiteams) on farmed snow since Sep 2024.
With the right farming process, European ski resorts above 1500m could easily run a 6-month ski season.
