Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austrian ski resort suggestions for last min December trip

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I will be looking to book a last minute trip in December and would appreciate some suggestions for good resorts In Austria. I like staying in quaint resorts lower down that have good access to larger higher altitude resorts, but any suggestions are welcome. I guess i am looking for a resort that is snowsure (or has access to a higher snowsure resort), good last minute availability ( flights/accomodation) and a straightforward transfer.

@JRB747373,
Are you looking to book now, or in December, just before you travel? And what dates are you thinking off.

@JRB747373, you didn't say if you were looking for a tour operator or DIY. With a tour operator you should be able to find accommodation in Mayrhofen in the Zillertal, although as the largest town in the valley I don't know if it meets your criterion of 'quaint'. Madeye-Smiley If you're DIY then you could go a bit further and higher up the Zillertal valley to the smaller village of Lanersbach. It's a small but pretty village with several hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses and several bars/restaurants to eat out in the evening. It has its own gondola the Eggalmbahn that feeds into the Zillertal 3000 large ski area that also includes skiing on the Penken area above Mayrhofen. Alternatively there are frequent free ski buses from Lanersbach to the top of the valley at Hintertux where you have snowsure skiing on the glacier.

@JRB747373, if you're doing DIY and like my suggestion of the Zillertal/Lanersbach then probably your best option would be flying into Munich (lots of flights there) and getting a transfer with Four Seasons Travel/Tirol-taxi, (I've used them many times and they provide a good value transfer service).

@JRB747373, How many people and budget? Can you fly direct to Salzburg?

Can't recommend anywhere now as your choice will be made just before you travel, and be entirely dependent on snow conditions in resorts.

just had a quick look and there seems to be flights available direct from Gatwick, which is my closest airport. Will be 3 of us. Been looking at accommodation around £1000 each for the week.

This same question has been asked 5 or 6 times in the past few weeks! Usual list of suggestions; Ischgl opens at the end of November pretty much guaranteed skiing, village not to my taste but lots love it; Arlberg, not always great pre Christmas as some areas still closed, if there is snow then likely to be more than elsewhere; Zillertal, plenty of variety, little to no skiing back to the valley, back up of the glacier at the end of the valley (though can be cold and stormy mid winter); Saalbach & Ski Amade, both large areas near Salzburg, Saalbach claims to have excellent snow making but suggest Ski Amade equally good. Ask again in early December when we have a better idea of how things are shaping up

I've often thought of Innsbruck as a quaint village with direct access to large high altitude skiing.

Blimey that's a lot! Are you sure you don't mean the whole package at £1000 per person? I'd still say Ski Amade is a good option. Schladming will be open early December and there's always Obertauren as a snowsure opton.

@JRB747373, if you’re considering Saalbach, contact me in due course. I have a ski-in ski-out apartment available - optimum location.
Send me a p.m. if you would like a copy of my comprehensive guide to the area (flights, transfers, ski area, restaurants, infrastructure, etc.), and a few recommended itineraries.

If you are DIY and set on the dates then an option is to book flights now. Even if you don't, it would be unusual for the flights to be full that week.

Then look at conditions a few days before, there will be huge availability the week before the Christmas week.

If you fly to Innsbruck then you have loads options easily accessible on public transport, some with direct train. The big pointy mountains to the west of Innsbruck and the smaller smoother mountains to the east. The Dolomites are also easily accessible from Innsbruck on public transport. Get your bag packed now but hold your nerve on finalising the plan, even until the day before. snowHead
