Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski school or private instruction in La Rosiere & Les Arcs, and

Hi there
We're heading to Les Arcs (Arc 1600) and La Rosiere for a 9 days in January with the kids (5, 7, and 9). 2 days in Les Arc and then 7 days in La Ros. My two eldest kids would be borderline intermediate skiiers now, whereas my youngest is a beginner, having done his first week of lessons last year. So I'm starting to look into booking lessons!

Can anyone recommend the ski schools in La Ros for the kids? We'll be staying in Les Eurcherts, so it seems that ESF is the natual choice? Does anyone have any good experiences with them in recent years?
We put the kids into group lessons last year in Saalbach and were really disappointed with them. My eldest in particular said she felt didn't learn anything new and just played 'follow the leader' all week. After observing the lesson for a bit, I can understand why. So I suppose I'm weary of spnding several hundred euros on sub par lessons, and especially since ESF doesn't seem to always have a really good reputation.... (The year previously we were in Serfaus, where the ski schools was incredibly impressive and really teaching the kids.)

Following my hesitation around group lessons...I wonder if would be more cost-effective/efficient to simply put my older two in a private lesson for a couple of hours over a couple of days? eg 2 hrs x 2/3 days. Over the past while I've found in other sports (tennis, swimming etc) that my girls progress much faster and develop better technique with the more focused lessons. It ends up costing less in the long run. Does anyone have any thoughts on ski school vs private instruction for kids?

My husband is an advanced skiier, so would be happy to go off with my older two. He's not precious about runs, but is just happy to be out on skis. So we're not really looking for the childcare aspect of ski school. (well at least for the older two, I think we'll put the 5 year old into ski school to get him properly started....)

Then there's me. I am in desperate need of help. I am a beginner/ borderline intermediate skiier, could do reds, but not happy with them. At all. I learned to ski as a kid in ski hills in Ontario in Canada (albiet not very well) and then have picked it up again in my late 30s'. Over the past few ski trips I've realised that I have some pretty bad habits and poor technique that is preventing me from improving on my own. I can get down the runs, but am not particularly graceful. So I could reallly use a private 1-1 lesson to help. Does anyone have any recommendations in Les Arcs or La Rosiere for a private instructor for my kind of situation?

Group lessons are always going to have to go at the pace of the slowest/ worst skier. If you can, private lessons will be much better. I don't have any recommendations but good luck and i am sure you will enjoy the lessons too.

I’m sorry you were underwhelmed with the quality of instruction in Saalbach. I assume that you enrolled the kids in the Furstauer ski school, which is the biggest and only one that offers group lessons. So much depends on the individual instructor, and it sounds as though you were just unfortunate. Furstauer has a good reputation, and I know several excellent, experienced (British) ski instructors, who work for that school.

If you don’t need the childminding aspect of ski school, I would certainly agree that private lessons are the way to go. With the benefit of hindsight, there are good ski schools and some excellent individual instructors that I could have recommended and put you in touch with, and you would no doubt have come away with a completely different impression. I hope that you get similar recommendations for Les Arcs and La Rosière.

I haven’t looked at the prices for ages. But when I did a working season in Les Arcs in 2010/11, it was roughly the same price for 1 week of group lessons for two people as it was for those two people to share a private instructor for 4x 2 hour sessions through the week. And just a much better way of learning, IMO group lessons are good for beginners but after 1-2 weeks private lessons are much more useful.

I’d definitely be looking at a few schools and comparing prices that way.
