Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Vigo di Fassa with kids

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi

Looking for a view please as to whether Vigo di Fassa is a good choice with 3 kids who have learned to parallel ski, aged 12,10 and 8. Was planning on getting lessons in local ski school for first half of week at feb mid term before trying to explore the rest of the valley. I see there are some nice looking blues around Campedie. Really I am looking at all the reds in the valley and wondering how hard they are. And trying to get a sense of how easy the bus system is with kids that age. Kids have managed fine before in Puy St. Vincent, Montgenevere and Vaujany/Alpe d H. Very keen to see all the pink rock as have never made it to Dolomites. Thanks

Bus service is very good (every 20 to 30 minutes) - I think it is 9 euros for the week (your accommodation may help with tickets..)

Italian Reds are easier than the ones if France....

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Some are some aren't and like everywhere it's weather dependant.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Kerryhead, Maybe dodge the blacks, but ignore the reds. They cover a wide spectrum in Italy from meh, to whoa depending on traffic/conditions etc. Plenty of lovely tree lined blues around Buffaure and some fantastic huttes for lunch. Madeye-Smiley

@Kerryhead, Vigo would be a good spot if you have a car to commute to the various liftbases in the vicinity, but 3 young kids on and off ski buses with all the equipment would not be my idea of fun...and could be inviting danger.

When my son was a 12yo, he slid on an icy patch under a skibus as it came to a stop, thankfully the wheels missed him, so I do speak from experience! Shocked He always has been very sensible, agile and sure-footed, but that caught him out. Carrying skis and poles didn't help. Your kids are even younger and with 3 of them, no way you can carry all their stuff. With big steps on and off buses, ski boots that have very little grip and icy patches everywhere, to me it's a recipe for disaster.

The local area Catinaccio is small, but has the impressive backdrop of the jagged Rosengarten peaks. The easy blues are on the opposite side that goes down to Pera and there are quite steep drop-offs from the Ciampedie summit plateau. The red down to Vigo is a blast.

Carezza ski area would be great for kids, very quiet and lots easy pistes, but it's a very winding road up there from Vigo.

The Buffaure sector above Pozza is nice but the easier end is the Ciampac bowl above Alba.

I would say with the kids, staying in Alba near the two big lifts would be infinitely preferable. Or anywhere you don't have to use ski-buses. snowHead

With regard to Italian reds, it's true that they are often easier than French reds, because France has a 4 tier classification with Green and Blue before you hit red, whereas Italy with 3 tiers (no green) has beginners on blue and red for intermediates and black for advanced/expert runs.

Will the ski school let you do half a week?? Normally you sign up for 5 or 6 days. You can but ask, I suppose Puzzled

I agree that Alba would be a preferable location. One lift and you're up on Ciampac. Ciampac is super bluesy cruisey. Remember to download back down to Alba. Neutral Razz

Another option...La Villa in the Alta Badia ski area...in fact, any of Corvara, Colfosco & San Cassiano would be good too, but La Villa might be better value...

@Kerryhead,

Have you booked flights for this holiday? Or just at planning stage?

What transfer options can you consider? Is hiring a car an option?

Is it just you and 3 kids, or another adult? Just thinking about car size needed to carry passengers plus ski equipment.

Great spot for kids, mine loved it up there on sunny days. Cool

Great snow too. snowHead

Downsides would be not a lot of accommodation up there or shelter in bad weather though.

 You know it makes sense.

If Vigo is the only viable option, this is the info page for the Val di Fassa skibus service, kids up to 12 do go free...please just keep them away from the edge of the road until the bus stops completely...hard when there's a jostling queue, I know! Shocked

Still last season's info on there, but should update soon for the winter! snowHead
