We are three weeks out from Soelden, the buzz is starting to build, and that can only mean one thing, it's that time of year when the FIS ski thread gets refreshed for the season ahead.
Welcome back to the 2024/25 installment of the white circus
Before we jump to the season ahead let's take a moment to recognise some of last year's triumphs:
1. Shiffrin's 97th WC win and her 8th Slalom Globe
2. Odermatt Clinching everything but the Slalom Globe
3. Lara Gut-Behrami having a career come-back taking her second overall
4. Daniel Yule taking the podium in Slalom at Chamonix from 30th in run two
There was not only the weather to contend with, but 21 races were cancelled with names like Marco Shwarz, Alexis Pinturault, Aleksander Kilde, Petra Vlahova, Wendy Holdener, Corinne Suter, and Sofia Goggia all ending their season short!
Looking forward to the season ahead, FIS are taking a more conservative approach to the calendar, no third attempt at Zermatt of the GS, but both the Men and women will travel to Levi and Gurgl following Solden for GS races for the first time. While the women take in Beaver Creek a first for them the main highlight of the season will be the World Ski Championships in Saalback-Hinterglemm from the 4th to 16th February, with the world premiere of a new discipline the team combination replacing the combined event.
To wrap the season up - the tour concludes in Sun Valley!
On the safety front all speed skiers will now be mandated to wear airbags, and I've hear they are being asked to wear "cut-resistant" underwear before it becomes mandated next season - if anyone has any photos of these please do share (ideally without you modelling them )

A sign that the season has really begun. Time to look for a deal or get that monthly Eurosport (or is that Discovery+) subscription.
Cut resistant underwear? What exactly is that made of, Kevlar?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I forgot to mention the big news that:
Marcel Hirscher is making a "comeback" to competitive skiing, though he doesn't like to use that term, racing for the Netherlands!
Lucas Braathen, after his spat with the Norwegian Ski Federation, is also back in action this season now racing for Brazil

@extremerob, Many thanks for kicking off the new season.
No discounts for Eurosport (Discovery Plus) from what I can see. £6.99 a month gives you access to the Online Live Ski Season Schedule and catch-up.
Virgin and Sky subscribers I guess you are at the mercy of the tennis and cycling schedule (and the weather)
Hope it's ok but I'd thought I'd also add a link to Laurie Taylor's YouTube channel that gives a great insight into the GB Mens Slalom Team
https://www.youtube.com/@LaurieTaylorSki
He also offers a Patreon subscription that gives access to the training videos too.

I am sad that Zermatt Cervinia will not happen, the idea of a race over two countries was great the weather didn’t help, maybe they could try in march …
I hope this season will be less dominated by Marco, especially in GS , we need some serious competition there , love to watch him but there is no point in even saying … guess who won the GS…the answer is always the same.
Really excited about the return of Marcel, I wonder how good he is now, i think he is only 35 , could even won a slalom or two.
Finally hope my favourite, lovely Sofia, is going to be as mad and exciting as previous seasons, without the injuries .

Really looking forward to it all. Eurosport for me comes into its own. My 28th Eurosport FIS WC season?
Odermatt, Shiffrin, Gut-Behrami are heroes.

I read on Facebook that Shiffrin will only be competing in SL, GS and SG this season, and no DH.
Lack of training time, and the time is takes to compete in a DH uses up 3 or 4 days.

I wonder if the fact that recent schedules have become so compressed has also been part of the decision. With postponed events and double headers it's difficult enough just doing the speed events, doing tech and speed has got to be hugely taxing.

I also wonder whether she thinks the risk of injury is too great. She missed 11 races after her crash last season. Costly.

Positive snow control for Solden - the teams are training on the Rattenbach already and they have two more training days before the Glacier is race prepped.
