Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Recommendation for a resort 28 - 04 Jan 2025

Hi all, could a kind soul please help suggest areas/resorts to look at for the post Christmas/NYE part of the holiday.

Would consider a sell catered appt if eating opportunities plentiful and not too eye watering on cost but in reality will prob swing twds a Hotel, half board to keep it easy with the kids.

Snow sure.

Family of 4, kids 10 & 14

beginner/intermediate level.

Open to anywhere - would prefer something relatively sceneic rather than grey concrete.

Lifts within easay access.

Decent varied breakfast and evening meal.

Understand it wil be pricey as will be over NYE - will top out at hopefully 7k inc passes/kit hire

Out of the ones I've been sent by we sort of liked:

Galtur Alpenhotel Tirol - 7K half board. Small resort but only 15 mins from Ischgl

Gartenhotel Daxer In Zell am See - 6K half board

But TBH neither really jumped at us - both are a bit of a distance from the centres.

All thoughts very gratefully received - I've got website brain drain.

@bankofdad,
I have been to Galtur at that time. It is actually an attractive small resort that is very snow sure.
The main potential problem is that the slopes are largely North facing and can be very cold in the middle of winter.
I don't know how easy the access is from that hotel, the main village is a short bus trip from the bottom of the lifts. Though there are a couple of hotels at the lifts

@bankofdad, welcome to snowHeads! snowHead

You're up against it, it's the busiest and most expensive week of the season everywhere and it's getting late to expect a lot of choice out there, but hopefully you can find something with your budget.

Are you looking for a package holiday with flights and transfers? Or a DIY trip where you book flights hotel separately and arrange your own transfers? Where can you fly from? Or are you looking to drive there?

You don't need a huge resort if you're only beginners.

It's in the village, so a bus ride from the lifts.

Looks nice though and Galtur would be a good fit for the OP's family in terms of terrain. As you say, snowsure, but chilly in midwinter.

 Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

My best recommendation would be somewhere like Oberlech but it's probably already sold out for NY and very expensive.

@bankofdad, families with young beginner kids are often advised to consider the Easter holidays rather than Xmas/NY.

It's cheaper, less frigid, longer days, less busy and still plenty of snow in a high north-facing resort. You'll all appreciate that! Cool

Could you go skiing at Easter?? Go somewhere warm at Xmas with the saving? wink

Galtur was prob our fav out of the two - but looked like more post piste fun in Zell am See

We took the kids to Norway on the last one and that was pretty cold - they took it fine.

It's a fair point and think if I'm not happy with what I eventually shortlist this week I'll prob look to that. I realise time and supply is not on my side this time round.

Look at Ste Foy Tarentaise, excellent resort for families who don't need hundres of miles of pistes, though it's more aimed at self-catering: there are restaurants (very good ones) if you want to eat out, but The only catered stays I can think of are offered by White Room amd Premiere Neige, both probably already full. You can order "meal boxes" from local supplier like Matty G Cooks or Huski

Take a look at hostel 4000 in Saas Fee, you can get half board option. Good facilities for kids and a proper spa onsite. Rooms may be a bit on the basic side though.
