Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

SkiWelt resorts

I am in the process of trying to sort a 5-6 week trip to the Salzburger Superski area in the spell after New Year but before the school holidays. Thinking of one week in the SkiWelt. Anyone any advice on resorts? Want ski connectivity, and while we don't need rocking nightlife we do want an apres bar or two, and a few restaurants. Seen a nice apartment in Going, but would that be too dead?

@RobinS, Brixen is the most central of the villages but apparently can be a bit quiet though there are some Dutch owned bars. Easy to get to the Kitzbühel area either on skis or by bus / car. Red run down from Hochbrixen is almost always in poor condition. Going is a bit out of the way local runs not up to much but there is a toboggan run. Ellmau is probably as good a spot as any though further away from the Kitzbühel ski area

We didn’t like Westendorf - nice enough village and location but seemed a very Dutch-dominated village. Appreciate that there will probably also be British villages around but prefer to avoid both!

@Inboard, SkiWelt is very popular with Dutch folk, best avoided during Dutch holiday weeks.

@munich_irish, yeah, we knew that but it was still a surprise.

I speak good German - several times we’ve had fun chats with Austrians (particularly in Vorarlberg); they’re really standoffish until they discover we’re Scottish not Dutch. I do find this amusing specially given their economy must rely partially on the orange euro… should also say I have various Dutch friends and colleagues and I have nothing against them! Just en masse and in party mode it can be but much (and the same is true of Scots, English, etc…)

@Inboard, next time you might want to ask the Austrians what they think of "die Piefke" who bring in even more Euros!

The six week spell in January and early February when there are no Dutch holidays is when we will be going, so no worries about too many Dutch. Will maybe look for an apartment in Westendorf for our week in the SkiWelt.

It’s just a shame the Vorarlbergers don’t speak such good German (or even Austrian German). Toofy Grin wink Laughing

So what's wrong with the Dutch? now that there are no Russians at the resorts, I suppose the SH have to have another nationality to have a dislike for.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the Dutch per se, just that any time a resort/area becomes popular with a particular nationality locals/resort staff will have more problematic customers from that country so develop a lower opinion of that country/tend to view them as "Those bloody XXX". Sounds like in the SkiWelt they see more Dutch visitors, so more problomatic Dutch visitors - which can mean better service when the staff realise you're British rather than Dutch. Mean while somewhere like Morzine you can get the other side - just because they see more Brits. so more PITA Brits.

It's not Snowheads that dislike them, more the locals from what I've seen and heard in the Zillertal Laughing

well perhaps it's just we haven't run into huge bunches of them yet, but as @Mjit, says it's any large groups of nationalities that cause problems because there will always be a few who cause annoyance.

Wherever you get large groups of folk drinking (especially youngish men) there is going to be grief and annoyance for others whether that is the Dutch in Westendorf, the Brits in Ayia Napa, the Germans in Ballermann. Scandinavians get blamed in St Anton & Ischgl (remember beer pong as the source of Covid Smile). Its the same everywhere. The Irish of course are always well behaved and abstemious Laughing

Yea, not sure the Covid story of beer pong in the Kitzloch is the strongest supporting evidence, what with it being completely made up and all...

Of course we Irish will happily sit and have tea, never cause any shennanigans whatsoever.

I remember a couple of years ago in a bar in Saalbach, there was a group of young men getting a bit 'lively' and obnoxious. A guy I assumed to be in his 50's walked past carrying some drinks, stopped by them, and with a strong Cockney accent exclaimed "'Ere lads, you lot Russian?"

"Da, Da! Ruski! Da!" They all shouted back.

"Wot are you all doing here then? Haven't you got a war to lose?" And he carried on walking. As soon as they realised the entire bar was watching them, they all quietened down and left.

I much prefer the Dutch.

@RobinS, apologies for derailing your thread! Hopefully the first two answers were helpful….

We’ve enjoyed Kirchdorf in Tirol as a base especially with the superski card; a bit of a commute to various places but great central location and quiet and scenic. Also great ski touring nearby.

To add to the sweeping generalisations, the Dutch are regarded as a PITA in Saalbach. They arrive en masse for designated “Dutch weeks”, generally ski badly (occasionally causing collisions), and monopolise certain bars, which play terrible music at maximum volume. It’s a very good reason to avoid such weeks.

I think the only places in Austria where you might not encounter as many Dutch tourists during their holidays are East Tyrol and perhaps Carinthia. Maybe some specific resorts as well, but otherwise, you'll likely find many Dutch visitors throughout Austria, especially during the Krokus holidays."
