Hello everyone, recently I bought my first pair of skis, ever. I am trying to work out the logistics of the flight for my ski trip(s) this year, and wondering how it works with checked bags and bringing the skis, for BA, and swissair. Cheers.

This gets discussed fairly regularly on here. Have you tried a quick search?

BA - you can take a ski bag instead of a hold bag as long as it's within the weight limit. No need to let them know beforehand.
Swiss - You can take skis in addition to your hold luggage allowance, free of charge.
Lufthansa - same as Swiss but you need to let them know beforehand.
Hand baggage allowance is big enough to put ski boots in on all 3.

BA are now asking you to let them know beforehand as well if you read small print.
I believe that isn't being enforced though in that I am sure snowheads haven't had any issues not last season but was a change for last season so this coming season YMMV

Usually your ski bag will get weighed, but not measured nor opened. So keep within the weight limits, the dimensions of the bag not so critical but don’t take the wee wee.
A little extra time to shlep to oversized to drop off. On arrival check where they will come out at baggage reclaim as there usually will be a specific area they are put out and not on the belt.

Other things to consider:
- Preferably, get a reasonably robust ski bag with wheels
- Ideally, the bag should either not be much longer than your skis, or have the ability to roll down the extra length, in order to tailor the size to fit your skis. Unfilled flappy ski bag can get caught
- When packing, I wrap the skis in old towels to give them extra protection
- They will be weighed and tagged at the airport on check in...and you may well be asked to bring them to Out-Sized baggage drop off
- Photograph the skis and their serial number (and keep proof of purchase) in case of insurance claim
- Photograph Ski and Hold Bags and enclose Name/Phone No./Email inside both, in case the airline misplaces them and the tags get ripped off
- At the other end - depending on airport - your skis can appear either on the normal carousel, a specific ski belt, or just in a crate along with other skis that is wheeled in.

Technically your ski bag can only contain a single pair of skis/poles/boots or single snowboard/boots - but almost everyone has either multiple pairs of skis/boards and/or shoves clothing in there too and I don't think I've ever heard of/seen a thread on here reporting having issues with a lost ski bag claim being rejected because the bag had 'unapproved' content, or only paying out for one pair of skis in the bag. Then again it's very uncommon for bags, ski or otherwise to actually go missing and be lost for ever (especially if you've remembered to put your contact details on/in the bag).

depends who you are traveling with. I fly BA for my trips so use a ski bag instead of my luggage.
in the ski bag I fit:-
2x skis
2x poles
helmet
all my ski wear and it comes out at just on the limit for weight.
in my hand luggage I just carry all my regular clothes and my ski boots.

If you're lucky enough to have decent status with BA, it makes it very easy indeed, 6 of us going over new year, all on Avios flights, and all with 3 hold bags allowed. I'm gonna miss that when I'm no longer at least silver with them.

I usually fly BA with a ski case as my hold bag, a mid-sized duffel as my carry on, and a day pack as my under seat - though I've yet to take my duffel any further than the check-in desk.
1. Check in the ski bag as my 1x checked bag.
2. Politely ask "As I'm going to have to wait for the ski case and this is usually a busy flight can I also check in my carry-on bag?".
So far the answer's always been "Of course" and never with any mention of being charged for checking a second bag.

@Mjit, as BA don't make you book a special ski bag then they don't care what's in it as long as it's not restricted and the bag is within the allowances.

Yea, I was more highlighting that BA have always been more than happy to check my carry-on bag for free (at bag drop as opposed to at the gate), so I've always had 2 bags in the hold while only paying for 1.
OK doesn't help if you're one of those who somehow needs 23kg of clothes, in a bag you could smuggle an extra person for a 7 day ski trip but even with ski boots in my checked carry-on bag I've done 14 day trips and still only tipped the scales around 14kg!

They usually love you to check in your carry on as their ticket and size of carry on allowance means their cabin lockers are chocka so they usually don’t refuse you.
When skiing my carry in usually has my boots so its not checked in. When not skiing I try to have hand luggage only so I don’t need to wait around for checked bags so don’t check then in either.

Meh, never been that much of a princess about my ski boots. Sure would I prefer my boots to a pair of hires for a few days? Yes - but also not the end of the world/my holiday, just some time being fussy about hire boots rather than just taking the first pair the shop offers).
And if they really go missing, well I'm happy for the airline to pay for another trip to Pro Feet and a new pair of boots!

@Mjit, lost skis are one thing (easy/quick to replace/hire), with boots its not just the poorer rental boots you will get, which is major, its also the time wasted in resort fitting and getting those boots. There are many more places I’d rather be than sitting in a rental shop getting crap boots.
