Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mont Blanc Tunnel

Morning all! I know that there’s ongoing maintenance in the tunnel, and that it’s currently closed until mid December. I assume they’re aiming to reopen to allow Christmas / New Year traffic between Geneva and the Aosta Valley but does anyone know if there’s planned work after that (ie in Jan / Feb)?
Tried looking at the website but dates for 2025 closures aren’t listed yet rolling eyes I’m getting paranoid about our plan to fly into Geneva to get to La Thuile at half term Confused

You will be good until at least after easter. There may be delays for the tunnel at 1/2 term, but only due to volume of traffic.

I wouldn't be too worried yet. As you say, they've almost certainly timed it with a view to having it open for the ski season so to plan more work for during the season itself would seem very odd.

Even if you take a more pessimistic view and expect some delays to the opening date, they really would be going some to still be having it closed by Feb.

If the worst comes to the worst, you might need to fly to Turin instead but that's not such a big deal.

Thanks both, can you tell that I overplan? Laughing
We’ve flown in to Turin previously so it’s no big problem, as you say.

@MotownJunk, and per Idris, there may also be overnight closures, e.g. 22:00-05:00 on occasion.

The Saint Bernard tunnel should remain open throughout the winter, which would also get you to Aosta- expect +1h30 on journey time from GVA.

We were there at the start of September just after it closed this year. Speaking to a local mountain guide, I believe that the plan is an annual closure for 3-4 months every year for the next 10 years.

Planned reopening this year on 16th of December.

@EdNewton, that’s the sort of thing being talked about.

The Italians suggested digging third (and fourth?) tunnels but the French weren’t having it.

Same as last year. Will reopen 16 Dec. Last year opened a couple of days early. Always check the overnight closures, especially on Mondays, as they can start quite early. If going Grand St Bernard add 1.5 hours on your journey but, of course, that relies on the Cols du Montet and Forclaz being open.
