Poster: A snowHead

Hi fellow snowheads,
I'm looking to rent a cheap and cheerful room for a month (either Jan, Feb, our Mar), ideally in France but open to anything really.
My tactic is to look for satellite towns outside the big areas, and then get the bus or funicular or whatever to the main area at first lift.
Does anyone have any good suggestions for towns near the bigger ski areas in France (or otherwise) ?
Thanks in advance!

Bourg saint Maurice, Orelle, Brides les Bains, Le Chable. If you're planning on having a car then there will be more, if you're relying on public transport/lifts then those are the most obvious

Cheers for the reply. Any idea how much a basic room would be for a month / per night? I saw someone post about a lodge in Bourg being £30 per night but when i looked on Booking.com it was closer to £4500 for the month!

@AlIre2024, Briancon? Access to both Serre Chevalier (by ski lift) and Montgenevre (bus). AirBnB has a few for 4 weeks from 4th January for a lot less than £4500.

Warth on the edge of Arlberg area.
Galtur,See,Kappl are all cheaper alternatives in the paznaun valley with Ischgl, you can ski the whole Silvretta ski pass area. Or Stay in Samnaun on the Swiss side.

I found a few relatively cheap places in Le Chable on booking.com. Straightforward to get the train from GVA. All of them were a short walk from the cable car up to Verbier. I think the cable car runs late into the evening if you want to blow all the money you’ve saved on a beer and a burger in Verbier.

Gulp. Not sure if the Base Camp appears on booking.com, but I suspect that it will not have vacancies for a whole month. However a quick look at the CIS immobilier site shows studios in Arc 1600 for about 1500€ for 4 weeks in March (The school holidays fininsh March 8th after whch the price drops). You can save a few hundred euros by staying in Bourg and using the funicular.
Having read elsewhere about the price of season passes in other resorts the seson passes in Paradiski are good value. A combined pass for Les Arcs and La Plagne costs €821 or €657 if you are 65 or older. For Les Arcs alone it costs €716 or €573. The 3 valleys comes in at €1,271 (50% more).

Wow, thanks for the detailed response John E. Is Base Camp the name of accommodation in Bourg?
The 1500 option you mention, is that inclusive of the “you can save a few hundred euro and stay in bourg” or exclusive?
Forgive my noobness!

@AlIre2024, A studio in Bourg st Maurice will cost from € 1178 https://cis-immobilier.locvacances.com/fr-FR/Lot/Detail
One in Arc 1600 will cost €1759
I do not know what you mean by "The 1500 option you mention, is that inclusive of the “you can save a few hundred euro and stay in bourg” or exclusive?"

@johnE, hes asking if the 1500 you quote reflects the few hundred you can save or not, although its clear the 1500 is for Arc 1600 and you said the saving can be made in Bourg

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@holidayloverxx, Thanks I now understand. The 1500€ was for a studio in 1600 and 1200€ will get you one in Bourg st Maurice.

@AlIre2024, aside from Les Arcs I’d also check out Briancon.
If you are thinking 4 weeks for early March you’ll even get something cheap (around 2500 Euros) in Tignes but the lift ticket will be more expensive than Les Arcs.

Hi. I had a smilar idea and have booked booked 5 weeks in Allemond which is near Alp D'huez. There is a lift from the bottom of the valley to one of the ski areas, and im near that lift. The lift pass is discounted for the area if purchased September (and includes days in other areas eg Les Deux Alps). It looks a bit quiet where I am going but it's done now! the accommodation, which looks a smart studio, was 1200. Have booked a cheap slight to Grenoble. I think the bus system within the resort area will hopefully be ok.

@AlIre2024, What 5 weeks did you book. I may be in Les Arcs over part of it if you fancy some company on the slopes

Spend the extra and stay in-resort.
Nothing worse than being trapped in a rainy bleak gray satellite dumpster town, while everyone is up the hill having a party in the snow.

@Whitegold, the OP hasn’t booked in a town like that. Bourg St Maurice is a pleasant valley town with enough bars and eateries. The funicular stays open plenty late enough to enjoy après-ski then ride down.

Depends what you mean by cheap , there is a shortage of long term accommodation around Bourg St Maurice Caused by the clamber of Ski instructors shipped in and seasonal workers for the big stations .

I'd endorse that, in all, probability has more going on than a considerable number of ski stations.
One of the best located valley towns with options to so much skiing in different areas, essentially central-ish to upper end of Tarantaise valley life and with many choices of what to do.
