Nevis's ski season has plunged from 3-5 months in the 2000s, to 1-3 months in the 2020s.

I'm from Glasgow originally but only took up skiing late in life after I had left. I hope this is not a naive question but is it possible to skin up to the reliable snow?

And talking of Nevis. Big
Long announce
Quote from their Facebook post
An Important Update on Nevis Range’s Winter Season
It’s been another challenging year here at Nevis Range, and as a result, we’re making some changes for the upcoming winter season. We know this may not be the news everyone wants to hear, but we believe it’s necessary to be completely transparent about our current situation and our reasons for adapting.
Changes to Our Opening Schedule
This winter, we will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays right through until next Easter, with the exception of school holidays. Additionally, we’re planning a later start to the ski season, aiming for February. If we’re fortunate enough to have exceptional snow conditions before then, we’ll do everything we can to open early—but realistically, this delayed start is the best approach given the winter weather we’ve come to expect.
Why We’ve Made These Difficult Decisions
The hard reality is that we can’t sustain the ski season as we once did. Over the last few years, January has provided only one or two skiable days at most, with last season yielding just three days of skiing overall. And it’s not for lack of trying—our team is as passionate as ever about skiing, but climate change is a reality that’s forced us to rethink our winter operations.
January, in particular, has become a month where conditions simply don’t allow for reliable skiing. Instead, we’ll use this time to perform essential maintenance on the Gondola and other facilities, with the goal of conserving resources and creating the best possible conditions for February and March.
These changes aren’t about cutting back—they’re about survival. Like many of you, we’ve noticed the dramatic shifts in winter weather patterns. Last year, starting in January, we experienced an unprecedented number of named storms that led to substantial damage on the mountain, including the near-total destruction of the Blue Bike track. Despite insurance challenges and numerous issues with Forestry land Scotland, we’ve worked to reconstruct the track, but the damage has been a real hit to our turnover this year.
The Future of Snowsports at Nevis Range
We know some people will be wondering if these changes signal the end of skiing at Nevis Range. The answer is no.
We remain committed to skiing—it’s part of who we are, and it always will be. But if we try to offer a full-scale ski season through the winter months, Nevis Range as a whole may not survive. Adapting to these new conditions doesn’t mean abandoning skiing; it means evolving.
Our vision includes a shift for all year round skiing, and we’re actively pursuing opportunities to introduce a large dry slope for year-round snowsports. This isn’t just an idea—it’s an ambition we’re already working toward with potential investors. We’re determined to create a future where skiing at Nevis Range remains accessible, but in a way that reflects the reality of our climate.
Strengthening Our Community Partnerships
To support this transition, we’ve reached out to the local ski club to discuss these changes and explore how we can best support our skiing community through this time. We’re committed to maintaining open lines of communication and finding solutions that keep Nevis Range a place for everyone to enjoy.
Season tickets
Last year we decided to change our season ticket model and we intend to continue as we did in 23/24 in 24/25
We are going to offer books of tickets available as a book of 5,10 or 15 days. These tickets will be valid for two years so if you are unable to use the tickets this season, they are still valid next season!
All partners and shareholders who have in the past received season tickets will receive a ticket pack for the season.
All of those who have earned discounts over the years will have those applied to the new books of tickets and the Local’s Discount will still apply at 15%!
If purchasing 15 tickets you will also receive a free Gondola pass for the Summer Season.
Looking Forward to New Opportunities
While this winter season may look a little different, we’re excited about the future. Next year, we’re thrilled to be reopening the Blue Doon track, thanks to the incredible efforts of John Sutherland and our activities team. We’re also looking forward to a series of new mountain biking events, as well as some other surprises we can’t wait to announce.
We are also open to discussions about community led groups taking part in the running of the ski area.
To everyone who has stood by us through thick and thin, thank you. We know this isn’t the news everyone wants to hear, but these changes are about keeping Nevis Range alive, evolving, and ready for the future. We’re passionate about this place and the community we’ve built together. We appreciate your understanding as we adapt to meet these challenges head-on.
Let’s make this season memorable, and here’s to many more to come.

Yes, but probably involves a long hike to get to the snowline (unless you're incredibly lucky - like one year when we skinned from the platform at Corrour railway station, staying overnight at Ben Alder bothy)
These days with e-MTBs you can get a long way into the back country before the final hike to start skinning

Looking at last year and the exceptionally high North Atlantic temperatures again this year, it feels as though some of the lower western alpine areas may soon be following a similar trajectory

Update from the 'shee. We've got our patrol training last weekend of the month and some prep work going on around then too.
>>
Snow in the forecast and we're excited about the coming season!
With a little luck we might even get an early Christmas present , and with a high pressure and some nice minus temperatures in the forecast for the coming week, followed by what looks at this stage (if the weather ghuru's have it right ) some really cold weather and a bit of snow next week, we’re really looking forward to what we hope will add up to be the start of a great season.
As skiers and boarders ourselves we know the ups and downs of a Scottish winter but we are committed to opening for snowsports 7 days a week, and only plan to be closed on Christmas day as normal during the coming season.
Our chairlift and tow maintenance are complete (eveything is working ) and preparations for the winter ahead are in place, even our cafe staff will have had a wee break to make sure they are well-rested before the winter.
Don't worry if the forecasted snowfall doesn't arrive in quite the quantities that are forecasted, we'll be out snowmaking from the end of November in preparation for our official opening on Saturday the 21st of December and in time for the festive break.
If you haven’t got a season pass, our online ticket and hire system will go live at the beginning of December for our official opening date, but if we have sufficient natural snowfall before this, we will be open. https://booking.ski-glenshee.co.uk/booking/
Our winter condition reports will start at the end of November/start of December, so follow us on FB and Instagram to get regular road and snow condition updates.
So get your dancing shoes on, start the snow dancing, and we'll see you on the mountain

I think Glencoe is outcompeting Nevis Range. This will only make Glencoe perform better, with skiers from Fort William going to Glencoe as well as the hoards from Glasgow.

You can no longer buy a season pass for Nevis Range.
Therefore Fort William locals are already skiing at Glencoe.
If the snow is good then new Rannoch chair at Glencoe makes a big difference to the queues.

@Haggis_Trap, yes I was looking at Glencoe's early bird season pass this year. Still thinking about it at £345 and wondering if I could squeeze 10 days at Glencoe this season?
I suppose the other benefit would be avoiding queueing for a lift pass!

They have pass machines now , buy online and pickup at machine, it's quite quick but a season pass supports the centres in all ways. Unless you are Cairngorm when buying a season pass means absolutely hee haw

Just done a tour of the webcams: A little bit of snow building up at the Coe and at Nevis Range. The Lecht and Cairngorm are looking pretty white, though obvs on zero base. Let's hope that forecast for the weekend comes true. Blizzards on the horizon.
I see they are running the access chair at Glencoe again. That was a quick maintenance turnaround.

@Ad_Hynkel, Yep, and Glenshee has similar amounts to Coe.
Its certainly cold enough at the moment, need a bit more precipitation though - its drizabone here in Edinburgh and has been for ages.

Forecast for Sat shows some significant snowfall with very high winds BUT it’s what happens after the initial snow and how high the FL gets which will be interesting. Good base building thought with a good drop of snow on a very frozen base and then some precip to stick it down, gets cold again next week. We’re planning to fire up the snow factory Monday

I live in Oban and was up at Appin yesterday, looking at munros like Ben Sgulaird they're almost bare now after being really white most of last week. Yesterday was very windy and a mild 10 degC, today is windy again at 8 degC, quite the contrast to a very cold 4 or 5 days before. Seems any early season bonus ski potential or base making is pretty much gone unfortunately. Always a long shot in November.

@Klammertime, hopefully the deep gullies that build up and give Scotland its ski base will survive even if cosmetically it’s not white!

The Omani desert is devoid of street lamp and civilization of that a British lady could not be sure or others but that’s the minority because we have the majority. If there are any true snowheads here, as a newbee I wouldn’t know but are not snowheads overfilling with snow knowledge both historic and present on the slopes but also realise that to even be enjoying times in the slope is a British invention. We had snow first and the first snowfall on the slope they pointed at and said “ that is a snowflake! And it’s white! We must call it derogatory a white snowflake”

Excuse me, I read Oban as Obey which is a Creature Comfort plasticine sketch from the imagination of Nick Park that besides discovering the moon is made of cheese also documented a interaction between a A beautiful Mrs Pig and a downtrodden Mr Pig who exclaimed after one of his Wifes absurd demands on the pigs masculinity. “ Obey.. you said” ( speaking of the marriage vowels) She promised to obey to Mr Pig, to obey and shut it with love.
