Sunweb one the biggest Tour Operators in Europe shared a number of insights into the booking behavior of winter sporters so far leading into the new season
More bookings, shorter length of stay
Currently, Sunweb has received about 20% of the total number of bookings. The organization sees an increase of more than 5% compared to the same period last year. Around 8% of the holidays were already booked for the summer. A trend within this growth is the increasing popularity of shorter winter sports trips.
Where the traditional winter sports holiday usually lasts a week,
In particular 35% of the Dutch now opt for a shorter trip. More winter sporters are booking a long weekend or midweek, something that travel organizations such as Sunweb also facilitate more.
Spending is also on the rise
Despite the shorter length of stay, the average spending per person continues to rise. This year, the average spend (stay incl. ski pass) is € 883 per person, an increase of 4.4%. This increase is mainly caused by inflation (prices of accommodations and ski passes have risen), but Sunweb also says that more luxurious accommodations are being chosen more often. In addition, the increased flexibility of arrival and departure days is appreciated, which increases the overall expenditure.
Ageing no longer visible
There is also a change in the age of winter sports enthusiasts. While a lot of attention has been paid to the aging population on the ski slopes in recent years, this is no longer visible at Sunweb. The influx of younger winter sporters is large this year; In 2024, the average age will be 35 years old, with the most common age at 27 years old.
In terms of destinations, Austria remains the most popular, with Mayrhofen, Flachau and Gerlos being the favourites. (obviously cheaper Austrian destinatons)
The school holidays are still the most sought-after, but weeks outside the holidays are more popular this year than last year. Especially in the month of January, bookings are higher than last year. This is probably related to the popularity of shorter trips....

Hmm, I wonder what that works out to per ski day.
For us, it's the other way round - having previously taken 2 * 1 week trips a year (perhaps the odd 2 week trip if we went to North america) we're now looking at 2 or 3 week trips, driving to resorts to avoid flying.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Remember that Sunweb is Dutch and these figures refer to the Dutch holiday trade. Perhaps the Belgians behave differently.

Or to put it another way "Average spend has increased in line with inflation, as you'd actually expect if you thought about it.".
