Would welcome any thoughts on Pila for a Christmas break with the family - all intermediate skiers. Reviews seem positive - snow-sure, enough skiing and relatively affordable. Also, we have one non-skier so would it be better to stay in Pila itself or in Aosta and get the lift up daily?

Did a trip to Pila a few years ago with ski club gb. Its quite a small resort, decent enough skiing but not much apres.
Lift passes at the time were a bit complicated and whole area aosta passes didn’t include any ski bus links between resorts so used private minibus to do days away, may be worth checking what works for your group
Don’t know about aosta itself was told the lift can take as long as driving up and may be busy at xmas

We went with a non-skier so stayed in Aosta.
There's not much there to do or see, but it is still better than being in the resort itself (better restaurants).
No issues getting the gondola each day.

I'll buck the trend and suggest staying in Pila. Especially with a 10 year old who will enjoy snow on the doorstep. Depending where in Aosta you stay it can be a schlep up to the start of the skiing.

I haven't been though I have visited Aosta and quite enjoyed seeing the Roman remains.
One thing I would point out is that at Christmas in the middle of winter Aosta is at the bottom of the valley and will not see a lot of sun.
Pila might feel a brighter sunnier place to stay even for the non skier who can travel down to Aosta.

It’s a nice compact area, but with enough to get away from crowds, the only real pinch point and times is at the end of the day on the run back to the gondola.
Good point about the Pila being sunnier if the sun does show it’s face, and probably more important, the non skier can take the gondola down and back up at times when it won’t be busy, it can get busy going up in the morning and down again at the end of the day, Interski use it a lot and bus school kids in from cheaper accommodation in the valley. Staying up in Pila will also mean you can get away from the arrival area easily and avoid the kids coming up, not sure how many school trips would be run over Christmas, might be worth looking at Interskis website or a call to them.
