Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Helly Hansen performance jacket washed innapropriately?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Bought a lovely 'new' HH performance jacket from eBay for 40 quid. Arguably it does look new but also smells like it has been machine machine washed. I think it had been in storage for a while. I am worried that waterproofing will have been ruined. Thinking of washing and reproofing with Grangers or similar. Will this rescue it?

Have you tested? Tried spraying it with a bit if water and see if it beads rather than assuming?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It did bead. But it also absorbed a bit of water into the fabric. Did not get wet on the inside though.

I'd wash it with a specialist gore-text wash or just soap-flakes if you can get them. This should remove any detergent residues in the membrane, which AIUI are what will cause it to lose its impermeability. Re-proof with suitable product as you say, should be good as new.

To the extent it works to a reasonable extent, I wouldn’t bother reproofing until it gets bad. Reproofing never seems as good as the OEM treatment you get out of the box.

Depends as well in what conditions you think you’ll be going out in. I tend not to ski in pouring rain, its just not fun.

We use Nikwax wash in, not spray on. It's excellent, but follow the instructions to the letter. Madeye-Smiley

There's nothing necessarily wrong with machine washing. It's what I always do, but with the right stuff. I use Nikwax too, and it seems to have worked OK.

I machine wash pretty much all my stuff (apart from down gear, where the fabrics are too fragile) with normal detergent and an extra rinse. Has never caused me any problems.

IMO most of the specialist outdoor soaps are an exercise in FUD.

Often, warm ironing is enough to restore repellency, but if not, I find the Decathlon spray is very effective.

An iron ore a run through the tumble drier as a first go might well work. If not, then as others have said, a specialist goretex was followed by a reproofing spray should do the trick. Dirt is the enemy of waterproof membranes.

Was with Nikwax wash, then tumble dry to reactivate the Gore-Tex.

I wouldnt waterproof the inside of a very expensive jacket or pants with the all in one washanwaterproof products.
Ive used it in a hurry on secondary gear though.

Some waterproof options for top shelf gear are Arcteryx Nu Durable waterproofing rather than Nikwax .

For the important cleaning or cheaper washing of items rather than natural soap flakes that dont always emulsify Waitrose has DriPack liquid soap 750ml around £3.50
With any real tough marks your going to have to use a strong detergent locally to clean then rewash an rinse the detergent out before treating for waterproofing.

Alot depends how much it all matters to you personally as to what effort one puts in .

If you do go for a wash-in product, make sure you don't add fabric softener as that will ruin any waterproofing.

 You know it makes sense.

It's strange stuff, fabric softener. Used too generously it certainly ruins the water-absorption capacity of a towel (so could be said to enhance waterproofing!!)

It blocks the pores in breathable kit.

I’ve had HH performance for years and I put them through the washing machine once or twice a year. Depending on how smelly they get. I use tech wash for washing and then nikwax maybe every other year. They seem pretty resilient! Also when they stop beading they still don’t seem to leak.

buy helly hansen, or other waterproofer wash, simple, in fairness you bought on Ebay, at £40 you really haven't lost anything.
