Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Question on remounting

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Background
I'm looking/hoping to keep the same skis but swap the bindings.
They are tele bindings so I think only the toe/front bindings matter. The heel/back bindings matter less as they are not load bearing. At least that's my understanding please do correct me if I'm wrong.
My old bindings are a bit unusual in that they have 8 drill holes rather than the usual 6.

I have some questions:
1 Would I be able to use the existing holes?
2 If new holes are needed, how big of a gap do I need to leave in between?
3 Does the answer to 2 change if I mount with inserts?

Please let me know if I have missed out anything obvious. I'm not going to mount them myself. At the moment I'm just assessing if it's possible to swap the bindings as if that's not possible that would push my plan back as I'll need new skis!

Depends! 22D and Bishop use the same mounting pattern, so - if you are changing from Axl to Outlaw then yes! There is a tiny difference in the mounting point, but not enough to lose sleep over. On the other hand, if you are going from Rottefella to Meidjo then no, you'll need to re-drill.

IIRC some of the holes are common between the Rottefella Freeride and Freedom (but I might be wrong)

10mm is the normally quoted distance. Go forward rather than back if you have a choice.

No

@ski, Thanks for the quick reply. Incidentally I have been looking at the same page on earnyourturns.

I'm looking to swap moonlight to outlaw x. This is the front binding https://www.scribd.com/document/764247305/Drill-Point and back https://www.scribd.com/document/764247304/Drill-Point-Back

I printed the outlaw x mounting template out and lay it next to my skis. By my lay look it might just be possible via a combination of using existing holes + drilling new ones.

I want to avoid the situation where I've got told it can't be done after I've bought the bindings. If that's the case, I would have held on to them a bit longer until I'm in a position to buy both the bindings and skis. Possibly by then there might be some newer/improved bindings who knows? Laughing Although it's tele we are talking about so probably not...

Why go forward rather than back? Is it because on tele we pressure on the toe?

No

Would inserts not make the holes bigger so the existing gap will be narrower?

Hmmm 8 holes is a lot, and there isn't a great deal of room between the back 6 --- which limits where you can move too. 22D do have their "Shift plate" -- which will allow you more freedom -- you can mount the plate allowing for the old holes, and then adjust the binding on the plate to get it back where it should be.

I'd go forward rather than back as that will help the ski turn, tele mounts used to be further back when we had skinnny skis - but modern fatter skis we can be just the same as alpine.

Inserts aren't that big so don't take up much room.

I've had Outlaws since they came out -- the ski great! You have a true step in, good (but not quite as good as TTS) tour mode, great edge control and really progressive engagement -- IMV the best NTN binding. If you can send me a pic of your template on the ski I can try to advise.

@freethemind, if you're installing Quiver Killer/Binding Freedom inserts then really want greater separation - 15/16mm centre to centre with a tele mount, especially if the ski is of a lighter construction.

@spyderjon, thanks. They are Brahma so I think they have metal core. Presumably that would be better then skis of a lighter construction?
