Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all
My wife broke her Tibia and Fibia last year and her recovery is slow, to be expected of course. However we would like to get a second opinion, can anyone recommend a London or South East based consultant they have used please?
Many thanks !

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

How was the bone mended and what stage is her recovery? By six months I was doing squat jumps and asking the specialist if I could ski next season, which should normally be easily OK. But there could be particular problems.

@snowball, unfortunately quite a lot of metal work including several pins. No star jumps yet. 5 months

Ah, OK: I was just "nailed" - a rod down the inside of the bone held in place by 2 screws each end. Relatively un-traumatic to the tissues.

I did the same on 3/04 .
Low speed topple over when my left ski tip jammed in a small hole , pin binding didn’t release so my leg snapped instead, at the level just above the top of the boot.
9 days in hospital and I had an intermedullary nail with screws top and bottom
My heart goes out to her as it is a long recovery.
My foot is still pretty numb and my ankle still swollen.
I have physio 2x per week for an hour at a time
I can walk slowly with a bit of a limp which I try hard to not do.
Ankle flexibility is my main issue and my leg is uncomfortable rather than painful so I have sort of got used to that.
I can ride my bike and play golf after a fashion so long as I don’t put too much rotational pressure through my left leg.
I am hoping to ski again at the beginning of the season.
However , a friend of mine who is an orthopaedic surgeon says it’s all pretty normal and to expect progress to be slow.
On his advice I keep thinking back and to 3-5 weeks ago rather than 3-5 days ago and then I can see that I have made real progress along the course of the last 4.5 months
I think resetting parameters for recovery is important mentally

@snowball, apparently she was doing some small jumps yesterday at the physio so some progress! I am not sure skiing will possible in December but by spring I really hope so.
@bobhitch, it’s the ankle that is also the problem (although still bruised around the knee too), the pins are restricting movement to some degree. She may look to remove the ankle pins. We will see if her consultant agrees or not. Good luck with your recovery!

You know it makes sense.

@Matrix, I hope your wife progresses faster now. I didn't realise it at the time but I think I must have been lucky. They operated on me the same evening at 10.30pm (! if my memory is correct) and healing was relatively quick. (I have been told nailing heals in about half the time of the old plaster cast method. Not sure if this is true.). Do you have x rays?
My accident was very similar (10 years ago) though I wasn't going especially slowly - I just hit the far side of a sort of ditch I hadn't seen in flat light. My problem was I hadn't realised at the age of 65 I shouldn't have my bindings set at the same level they were 30 years earlier. I was lifted out from the St Anton off-piste, my stretcher dangling on a cable under a helicopter. Since it was the first day of my season (I had booked 3 weeks) I wasn't properly appreciating the drama.
