@Timberwolf, Good job. We're booked out for the season apart from a few days in Dec and the (late) Easter weeks.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, is that unusual to be booked out by this point?
We are out for Christmas week so following this thread with interest.

@NickyJ, Not unusual, most of our clients are returners and with Easter being so late this year, everyone's looking for earlier dates. We may have one or two late drop outs in January that we will open up for bookings.

is there any public transport from salzburg airport to flachau, its one of the few places in austria i have not been to, so would love to give it a go, and as my ski buddy has retired i will be on my lonesome.

@philusher76, there is, and @RedandWhiteFlachau can tell you more, but a shared return transfer, usually in a minibus with max 2 or 3 stops, is only €60 with neu touristik

@philusher76, Multiple options. Timetables not published yet but:
Bus-Train-Bus. SZG to Salzburg Hbf, Train to Radstadt, Bus to Flachau (2 1/2hrs on a good day)
Bus-Bus. Bus to Eben Park and Ride, Bus to Flachau. (2 Hrs).
Bus -Neu Touristik SZG to resort (1 1/2 hr).
If you're on an afternoon flight I'd suggest a night in Salzburg and travel the next day.

Thanks for that HLx, might come from the Zell am See side instead. Though last year a friend came the A10 Werfen way and said he hardly noticed any roadworks!
|
|
|
|
|
|
@japes1275, you might be stopped coming off for Zell if that's not your destination; there will be controls to stop gridlock in the surrounding area. Delays can be 10 minutes or several hours, it only needs a shunt on the day.

@holidayloverxx, no I mean I’ll come from Zell itself. I did that last year and saw no traffic at all as I turned off for Gastein before the A10. I just hope the weather is nicer than last year, the drive through Kitzbuhel etc in the rain was very depressing. At least on the way back 7 days later it was warm and sunny - unfortunately it wasn’t May, it was January!!

A10 Update.
The second phase of the Tunnel refurbishment is underway. At busy times there is traffic light controlled entry to the roadworks section between Golling and the Pongau exit for St Johann/Zell etc. Traffic backs up on the approaches to both Northbound and Southbound but, runs freely once your in, all be it with speed restrictions. On Saturday and Sunday during the ski season, expect about 1hr to 1hr 30mins waiting time assuming no accidents in the contraflow. Southbound, I'd aim to hit the roadworks section before 09.00 or after 18.00.
There will be restrictions on travelling on exiting the motorway. Remember, your alternate route is everybody else's alternate too.

To avoid the traffic we’re planning to get the train from Salzburg to Schladming in December. Do I need to book tickets in advance for a fixed train or can we just buy them on the day at the station? So excited to come back to the area!

@RedandWhiteFlachau, How busy does the road towards Liezen (320) get. I am currently considering flying into Nurmeburg, and potentially the return route to the airport via Liezen and Passau could be better if things are really bad on the A10. In optimum conditions that route is around 1 hour longer, than via A10 and Munich. However if there were to be significant delays it could be the better choice. But that also depends on how busy that route gets.

@ski_free, The 320 won't be any worse and might be better. The Cloggies tend to head in a straight line so fewer of them on that route.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, cheers for the feedback. Still mulling Flachau vs Warth/Damuels. The latter is logistically easier for sure, but watching some Flachau vlogs, it does seem like an amazing ski area. Especially in good conditions it looks epic.

|
|
|
|
|
@ski_free, Never skied Damuels so I can't give you a comparison. But a base in Flachau gives you direct access to a much bigger ski area and, the rest of the Ski Amade on the same pass is within a short drive.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, Thank you for all the feedback so far.
Indeed, Ski Amadé is becoming more tempting, and I might go ahead and book today. I was considering Damüls primarily because it's easier to access from the UK when driving. Plus, I grew up skiing in Bregenzerwald, and somehow I’ve never been to Damüls—it feels overdue! Though it would appear it will have to wait a little while longer
I have a few questions about the villages in Snow Space. Are there any major reasons to avoid any particular villages? We've found suitable hotels in Alpendorf, Wagrain, and Flachau, and we're leaning towards Alpendorf. We're planning to book half board, so the overall village life isn’t a major factor.
If we drive from the UK, Alpendorf could work out well since bypassing the A10 via Saalfelden or Jochberg becomes a bit more feasible if traffic on the A10 is bad.
If we fly into Nuremberg and overnight south of Munich, possibly around Putzbrunn, we could get an early start and spend a day skiing in Maria Alm, then get an 8-day Ski Amadé pass.
Since we'll have access to a car either way, what other resorts in Ski Amadé would you recommend exploring? From Alpendorf, Bad Gastein seems like an easy trip. From Flachau, maybe Schladming makes more sense. Are there any resorts that you think would complement Snow Space well?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@ski_free,
Alpendorf has nothing but the hotels and apartments for skiing, so fine for a HB option but it's not a "town" and doesn't really have any Apres Bars if that's important to you. It is a 3 mile bus ride down into St Johann for anything else.
Wagrain is more of an Alpine village with easy access out of the valley to both sides of the Snowspace ski area. A few nice places to eat out in the evening if you choose to but most are part of hotel complexes. More picturesque than the others in Snowspace.
Flachau, better restaurants, best Apres Bars (Hofstadl and Dampfkassel) more accommodation and easiest access from the A10. Plus Therme Amade in Altenmarkt for a swim/sauna. More ski schools and best for other Snowsports. (X-Country, Snowbikes, Snowshoe etc).
If you stay in Alpendorf, there's enough skiing to keep holiday skiers busy for a week. It would probably take you a couple of days just to get across to Zauchensee!
For my clients I always recommend a day skiing the Hochkonig (Maria Alm -Mulbach). It has a great trail, "The Konigstour" which is easy to follow and takes across the whole area and back in a day. Even early beginners can probably do it.
Bad Gastein and Schladming are more fun if you're a higher end skier and take about 30-45 mins to drive to, depending which end of Snowsapce you're at. . Grossarl/Dorfgastein is a hidden gem and very easy to get to from Alpendorf. New lifts there in recent years have made it a great day out.

@RedandWhiteFlachau, thanks again for all the helpful insights.
Will definitely add the Konigstour to the the itinerary. Sounds like a great family tour. Grossarl aslo appears to be a good option from Alpendorf.
i think Alpdendorf will be a good fit for us, since we are on half board and on a family trip apres isnt on the agenda (yet !). Hotels there look nice with easy access to slopes.

A quick question - Is there any advantage in buying the lift pass (just a standard week one) any earlier than the day of arrival? We get into Schladming lunchtime on a Saturday and won’t be skiing til Sunday morning so have the time to visit the office. Thanks

Discount of up to €60 now, but no details on how the pricing increases. My assumption is that in quiet weeks it will remain at the lower price for longer, but being a commercial operation they will ramp it up for those last minute people, and the busy weeks will ramp up more quickly.

It’s coming in at €360 for new year week - just trying to find last years passes so I can reuse them. I emptied my jacket to wash it, put them somewhere safe and can’t remember where that safe place is

@ousekjarr, Last year prices for March went up quite quickly, as I recall.
All in White cards (season pass) - €100 discount (code emailed) if you had a season pass last year. Makes it a bit more palatable.
