After the late start last year I thought I’d start The All New Weather Outlook 24/25 again at the traditional time first day after the summer solstice.
This thread isn’t owned by anyone and is free for all to comment and post , please be nice , comment on trends , forecasts and conditions but try not to concentrate too much on particular resorts or stations , leave that to their specialised threads . Whilst it’s inevitable that climate change will come up can I remind you all that this is about the Weather Outlook and a Climate Change thread exists for larger conversations .
Let’s hope it’s a cracking season ahead , starts early , ends late with plenty of Cold , Powder and Sun and a lots less rain as there was last season .
Looking forward to plenty of insight from our weather experts and even some from our favourite doomsayers .

Its going to be a brilliant season. I knows because it’s looking increasingly likely my snow days are done.
Even a snow scoot is probably not looking possible. Ive been told surgery is not an option & only offered steroid injections.
Subchondral cyst in my foot that has broken through between my navicular & cuniform!
So will probably end up with a fracture at some point
At least I wont have to spend money on new boots every year blaming them for the excruciating pain.

Cold enough on Speyside to go for a vindaloo tonight in Aviemore. Delicious! Drier today after all the rain yesterday but no sign of a significant warm up here yet.

Mad watching the webcams on the Bergfex app on my phone which I check when bored during the season, now showing hikers in shorts on sun drenched tracks through meadows, and largely snowless mountains beyond
Really should get out for an alpine summer holiday some time

Argentina and Chile have seen some of the world's biggest snowfalls of all time in recent days.
Around 4m of fresh snowfall.
Australia and NZ are struggling.
Cold but dry and little snowfall.
South America is the place to go for July 2024.

Unseasonably cold here in sub tropical Brisbane Australia. Coldest it's been in years. It even snowed here in Queensland a couple of nights ago.

Is it too early to put in requests for next northern hemisphere winter? If not I'd like snow in the Cottonwood Canyons and up to Grand Targhee/Jackson Hole for Christmas and the first 10 days of January then snow for Revelstoke and Fernie from the 12th to the 22nd of January. Then from March 8 I request snow for the French Alps for about 3 weeks before blazing sunshine in Amsterdam for the first few days of April.

@Dylan_T42, unfortunately I’m not going to get there this season. It’s 1000 miles from where I live.
I am booked to go to NZ South Island in early September. If there’s no snow we’ll hike and bike.

Aug 2024 has seen astonishing heat in the European Alps.
Zero iso frequently rising to ~5000m and above the summit of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak.
It's another big year for glacier melt in the Northern Hemisphere.

After good end of season dumps to set it up pretty well for summer Hintertux appears to have closed for skiing. I think that's the first time?

It's the 2nd time in the past decade that Hintertux has closed in August.
It's been 5-15c in the daytime at 3000m for weeks, and not freezing below 4000-4500m at night.
The "frozen wall" at Tux is now snowless, and just dirty ice left.
The era of 365-day skiing in the Northern Hemisphere is all but over
RIP 2024.

Does anyone know if there's a place where season are reviewed from a snowfall/conditions POV. Along the lines of "2012-13 was one of the snowiest winters on record. December and January saw xcm of snow and xdays when it snowed".
Just interested to read how seasons have been as if you go through the messages they are very reactionary and a great start can turn into a poor Winter and vice versa.
I think there have been several seasons on the poor side of average over the last few years but that there have still been great late season options due to late dumps.
Last time I went skiing was 2/3 years ago in La Plagne where we were sweating in sunny queues in February.

I think the temps may be a better barometer. Last season was good up high - ie, there was lots of snow, but it was rain lower down which was disaster. So maybe the average freezing height might be a better indicator.

Surface water temperatures in the Mediterranean have reportedly been at an all time high. Global averages are almost as warm as last year which doesn’t sound like good news for this winter https://climatereanalyzer.org/clim/sst_daily/

I'm currently in Wanaka for the season. Currently a s**t tonne of snow forecast for next 7 days. Treble cone and Cadrona should be great next week.

I wonder how depressing this thread is going to be for the Alps this year...or is this thread WEATHER rather than CLIMATE? I know we all like to make the distinction here. My money is on regular rainfall up to 1800m, with very limited dumps over entire season. But I'll resume my snow dances we all do and be in denial of the facts, although might hold off a bit until at least November.

@Pyramus, definitely Weather rather than climate but one can’t help touch on it sometimes . A separate thread was set up last season for more in depth debate https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=167708
Meanwhile with no expertise my gut feel for this coming winter is cooler with slightly less snow/rain than last season with the weather track from the north / north west rather than the south west /south . Snowy start in late Nov /Dec then mild over NY , nice dry annoying anticyclone mid winter to a very changeable March into April .

Timberline snowfield, Oregon, US, closed in mid-Aug, a month earlier than normal.
Says Fee, Switzerland, is rumored to be partly closed this week.

@munich_irish, that wouldn’t be good at all Given how much heat there is in the oceans these days it wouldn’t be surprising again though.
|
|
|

That makes for grim reading. I think my approach is going to be to wilfully ignore that until November, then take stock again.
