@hang11, I have kept touch with friends - it's rather ironic that you have been having better weather (if a touch cold) for model flying while heading into winter, then we have been having heading into summer.

@achilles, Yes not much in the way of winter yet. A few areas will be opening with limited terrain this weekend. It’s been cold but really dry all summer and that has continued over autumn and early winter.
Being optimistic the storm systems in the Southern Ocean have been firing up a lot more lately, but just not hitting the sweet spot for good snow yet. Early days though.

No it’s not !
It’s a usual start for super early in winter - this pic is right now just heading up to work and I would say it’s about 20cm last night in the craigieburn range with a solid forecast over the next 10 days.

Cardrona is looks pretty well covered. And the Queenstown areas are building up their coverage little by little so it will be ok by the time we really need it.

It's not uncommon for central parts of AUS (Alice Springs) to be around 0 degrees C at night, only to reach 30oC by lunchtime.
You need about 4 sets of clothing for a 24hr cycle.

A good spring for skiing in the Southern Lakes region. 25 to 40cms a few days back and now 30 to 80cms this morning. Coronet Peak reporting 30cm + at base and 80cm at the top. Remarkables reported 51cm so a nice top up for the rest of the season and possibly more snow on Sunday

Almost all the Australian resorts close for the season this weekend.
Australia had a good firsthalf to the 2024 season, followed by a bad secondhalf.
The Turoa volcano, NZ, looks like it might be ready to pop.
Argentina looking sweet.

Another 10cms this morning at both Coronet Peak and Remarkables with a few more hours of snow fall forecast. Posible more over the next few days

@hang11, I had lines that were well worth it at the Saddle Basin lift at TC on Saturday but not a wait of more than a minute at either Remarks, CP or Cardrona on previous days last week. I was pleasantly surprised as I’d read all about the long lines at Cardrona.

One heli skier died in an avalanche in the Arrowsmith Range area yesterday. The area in north east of Mt Hutt in inland Canterbury. Very little information available so far. Just that the lead guide was caught in the slide and the died shortly after being rescued.

I knew him. Great guy and an absolute professional, as is the company he was working for.
There will be an investigation so no point speculating on the details. Lots of really gutted and upset people around today, it’s a fairly small community.
