One of the greatest skiers, but at 39 she had a lateral unicompartmental knee replacement op recently
The dangers of elite race skiing are huge, but sometimes we forget the price they pay after their careers end.

Like many top athletes, I guess. The hazards of too much exercise are different to those of too much sitting on the sofa, but neither is advisable!

@Frosty the Snowman, and no shortage of people who nack their knees (or other parts of themselves) before they even have a career in racing

Franz Klammer had some choice words for her about this.
"Wenn sie das wirklich macht hat sie einen Vollschuss!"
He also reminded of the case of Bill Johnson, who tried the same thing at age 40 and sustained serious injury to the left side of his brain, nearly bit off his tongue, and was comatose for three weeks.

1. Her name is spelled "Lindsey".
2. She didn't exercise too much, she blew out her knees too much. Not much left to fix. You can't wear yourself out from too much exercise, this myth has been disproven.
3. Klammer was spot on about her and about BJ, who never fully recovered and was also a mess for the rest of his shortened life. (Not to be unkind, but he was always kind of a mess).

You know it makes sense.

If she thinks she can and she wants to and her docs have said, "well you now have the knee of a 20 year old so its up to you Lindsay" , and the race officials say yes, then it is, indeed, up to her. Not saying it'll be a good decision and probably won't be.

Funny how some words/phrases don't translate well - "When she really does that then she has a full shot"
"If she really does that then she is crazy" is probably the best translation I can come up with.
It's bad enough when old popstars try to get back into the limelight again but they don't have the risk of a massive injury if it all goes wrong,
Hirscher, Vonn, Mike Tyson - which other sportspeople are planning or thinking of making a comeback?

my two cents - Vonn if she ever gets to a comeback is going to be short lived, feel this is all a publicity stint, and the sponsors know she can generate money in a way others on the tour can't so there is going to be support/backing- her image and the fact she speaks German is something which has given her stardom level fame in Europe, something which Mikaela no matter her success, reach and fame hasn't quite managed
Let's admit this Vonn is going to sell you skis vs shiffrin and that extra million of followers on Instagram is huge and worth a pretty penny to sponsors

@DB, Hirscher unlikely to end up with life threatening injuries, unless someone tries to drop a drone on his head again!
Worst case (likely) some torn ligaments. I'm OK with him doing his publicity stunt.
Vonn OTOH, could be a bit more serious and not really something I want to watch

@extremerob, Got to agree. I can't see a comeback lasting more than one or two races, especially if it's competing at downhill.

Vonn is one of the finest skiiers ever, and probably still one of those that have enjoyed watching the most.
But seriously, she needs to give it up. Her time has been and gone. And this qualification rule change is daft- and will just end up disillusioning many a young skiier wanting to make it on the main stage.
Lastly, the Eurosport coverage last week was very silly. Far too much about her, despite not even being involved.

It certainly sounds it.
I'd be interested to know her real motivation - is it purely financial, or has she not fund a purpose outside of elite sport or is it simply a question of unfinished business?

I heard the quote from her about that was "To crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women"

The reason in my view is the last four words spoken by George C. Scott in the final scene of "Patton", which I commend to your attention (youtube, Last scene of Patton). Stunning cinematography.
But for those who don't go there, he concludes: "all glory is fleeting".
She wants more, she's hardly the first, won't be the last.

He can box, his skill level just isn't anywhere near the top fighters.
..... but yes it's a show, a circus where there is a ref to save you from getting hurt too badly. It's making a farce out of boxing.
In skiing the clock doesn't lie, there's no acting, no show and no one to catch you when you fall at speed.

wasn't it just a show fight?
I've seen some youtube videos where amateur fighters take on pros. In general the speed and technique of the pros is way above amateur level, as you'd expect.

@davidof, an exhibition fight. 8 rounds, 2 minutes, heavier than regulation (so more padding) in the gloves. Was a pretty dismal showing.
