Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, I'm considering switching from my trusty all mountain skis (Salomon QST Lux + Shift bindings) to a slightly lighter setup focused on touring. I've tried the Elan Ripstick all mountain model (the women's 94, 162l) and got on really well with them. I was hoping to test the tour specific ski (same dimensions but a bit lighter) but can't find anywhere in Chamonix that has them available. Just wondered if anyone had any insight as to how they compare and/or any thoughts on somewhere within driving distance of Cham - including Verbier - that might have them for rental? Any advice much appreciated.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@schauspiele, do Concept not have them? Mrs U bought ex-rentls few years ago and they're still pretty close to Elan?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@under a new name, they don't have them in that spec this year - only the 88 or the 106 unfortunately. Have also tried Sanglard but no joy.

@schauspiele, try the 88s. I suspect you won't feel much of a reduction vs the 94s and anyway, could argue 88 is better.
I (?) think Mrs U is on the 88s and she's happy touring versus her 98 Mantras, or 98 Movements ...?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@under a new name, how does she find them in deep snow? (I tried Blizzard Zero G 84s in the trees at Grands Montets yesterday and struggled to keep the tips from digging in when it got windpacked and heavy - so anxious about going too narrow.)

I'm not sure there's been too much touring into deep snow ...

@under a new name, I can understand that! Thanks for the advice, I may give the 88s a try and see how they feel.

Not quite the same - as it’s the man’s equivalent ski - but I have the Ripstick Tour 104 with Dynafit and it’s very capable in deep snow. Weight wise it is about 300g per ski less than the closest Ripstick non tour equivalent ski. I think it’s substantially the same weight as my go to ski (Black Crows Orb Freebird) so good to tour but the extra width is good in powder. My only criticism is it doesn’t feel too robust and another skier in our valley (Val d’Anniviers) blew the sidewall on his first day skiing. I think the factory replaced them free. My instagram has a bit of video of the skis in powder the other week @cb.skis

Hallo, a quick update - following the helpful posts above I rented Ripstick Tours in a variety of lengths/widths - none in exactly the dimensions I was looking for but I liked them enough to buy a pair. Thanks for the feedback @chrisJersey, @under a new name.
