Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi All
After choosing 2 'smaller' resorts for our previous trips and suffering from lack of organisation from one and lack of snow from the other, I think it's time to go bigger and hopefully snow sure
So what are the opinions on Sestriere or La Plagne for our Half Term trip next year?
Our group is likely to be about 45 students and mostly complete beginners
TIA

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Two thoughts:
Half term in La Plagne will be rammed (probably for the whole month)
Sestriere has a long and interesting history that may make it more relevant for a school trip: as a pass in the infamous 1914 giro d ‘Italia (https://www.podiumcafe.com/book-corner/2014/5/6/5686434/Giro-dItalia-1914), and as a holiday camp for the FIAT workers in 1930's fascist Italy.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Definitely not La Plagne , the station bed numbers have far exceeded lift capacity , it is the worst in the Tarentaise .
Italian resorts slopewise are quieter during the peak holiday period , all round cheaper and the doesn’t suffer from Saturday transfer mayhem .

I'd agree with the above re being busy, it's a busy time generally so you might like to consider a few other aspects too.
Italy is less busy generally speaking.
There's arguably more beginner friendly terrain in La Plagne.
Having skied with beginners the link over to Sauze can be a challenge for beginners although they were adults so the fear factor amplifies. I raise this only because the instructors will likely avoid it with a group for the first half of the week.
Sestriere will likely be cheaper overall. Italy generally is. IMO.
Not the question but other good value less busy area's (if that's a concern), with good snow record might be...
La Rosiere / La Thuile (italy), enough skiing for a week, sense of tavel and good snow record... Not much off piste activities
Serre Chevalier. North facing, high enough, more than enough sking and good value relatively.
Champoluc (montarosa ski). Abit of a wild card with school group so you'd need to research activities, very quite usually, good size, good value... Italian side of Monte Rosa.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

My daughter quite enjoyed La Plagne (advanced skier) a few years back and she didn’t complain about queues (perhaps a ski school line?)
Her school have had a recent successful trip to Sestriere (although many are already good skiers).
My son went to Les Deux Alpes and I was concerned given it doesn’t get a good press on here. But their ESF instructor made it fun - again he’s advanced but it was a mixed group and all were very happy with the trip.
Think they went with SkiBound
